Dying for PROPtime after UPEW...

Since I hit the ground in Ohio, I had to jump straight into my Computer business.
(Funny how the work piles up when you take a couple days off.)

I'm dying for some Propeller time! (Planned for the holiday weekend.)

Anyone else feeling this way since UPEW?
Find any new projects/directions you want to try? (I did!)

Psst.. Someone is working on Youtube videos from the show right now!

I'm riding the tail end of the high from the expo and using it to motivate me to finish the Sphinx documentation. After that, something completely different (not sure what yet).

    Yeah!

It was tough to DO NOTHING, until last night. That was fun working on getting the demo boards from the freebie table up and running. Some of those components are really, really small... I need better gear! (isn't that always the case)

One thing I did do was jot down some of the stuff that was talked about, so that I've at least got a good start on things this weekend.

I've been itching to do more work on PropFAT, under PropCMD 2.0. I have first light on reading files, which means it's about 80% complete. It will fully support subdirectories (all done), the DOS read-only and hidden file attribute bits (done for ATTRIB and using / displaying them in DIR), real DOS wildcards with * and ? as DOS uses them (working), support n files open at a time where n is however many you want to reserve buffers for, and those buffers are only about 70 bytes not 512, and n 512 byte buffers where n is determined by how much performance you want or need (and if memory is your thing n can be one even if you want lots of files open, it will just thrash the SD). The whole thing would be very close except I'm thinking of moving the text object to PropFAT instead of PropCMD so that it can mediate disk access, share things like str and hex and dec among output devices, and redirect output (DUMP myfile >newfile). Oh, and it's very thoroughly commented so you can mod it to your own purposes without being an OS guru.

The only major thing left to do is non-meta disk writes, then COPY CON and COPY (which will work VERY differently). I might do some kind of logging object to demonstrate multiple simultaneous access.

Only problem is, I have spent the last two weeks shuttling between here (New Orleans) and Shreveport (5.5 hours drive away) for a couple of important jobs, and more is scheduled for next week. I'm thinking of putting some personal time in on it this weekend but the house is asking politely for some work to be done (all right, it's asking politely but the neighbors are a bit more insistent that the grass needs to be mowed).

Snuck down to the lab with a couple of coffee..

Thought I *might* be able to cheat by adding up the bytes from an 8bit sample.
    Duh.. Of course not!

I am not even a prop-head yet and I can't wait to play with my Prop-USB proto board and my recently resurrected freebie table Demo Board. I am hoping to have time tomorrow since I have the day off, but I have a lot of catch up work to do around the house that's been ignored since my 2 week vacation in early June.

You might actually be able to do something like that and look at the data as the amount of "area under the curve" you still need to reference a threshold and integrate a specific time slice of the data however.· I think peak detection over a certain threshold though is going to be your best bet. Let me know when you get to the point of needing to "stretch" the data to normalize it.·· .... Ok Shhhh no more clues. :o)

For me post-UPEW prop-time has been less than enthusiastic - feels like jet-lag somehow. I napped all day Monday and Tuesday. Now I'm back to trying different code optimizations for my 16 IO Prop-XMM memory module. Other than that I feel listless and don't really know why. Hope no-one else has this problem.

'Probably the heat. California's scorching weather has now extended a finger into Washington State, and my shop is getting too hot for productive work. All I feel like doing is reading N&V in the shade while sipping on an icy G&T.

    LOL!!!

Plain old lime juice and shade here in PDX.

I have to say the travel was rough for me. Between that and work, I was just cooked! I'm jumping in little bits at a time. Fixed a demo board, now it's time to upgrade it with Bill's Xtal, so I've got at least one 100Mhz board. Today, I'm surfing a little and thinking through some display code OBC and I talked about.

Today, I slept through most of the heat. Better to do stuff at night when it's cool.

Yeah, the drive back to WA wasn't the most pleasant for me either. My old beater diesel Benz isn't air conditioned, and the temp in the valley was 108F+. I stopped and bought some sunscreen for my left arm and even had to remove my wristwatch since it was starting to burn my wrist! 'Finally started to get some relief from the heat around Medford, so I decided to drive all night just to avoid the daytime heat, the weekday construction crews, and the Portland traffic. 'Got home about 4 a.m. When I arrived, the floor on the passenger side was completely covered with Gatorade and bottled water containers!

Was it worth it? DEFINITELY!!! I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

    Me too.

Man, that's hard core, driving back to WA. I live west of PDX. How long was your drive?

I got lucky and ended up with a work flight to San Jose. Got back home about 10:00. ...you were still driving!

I left Parallax at 1 p.m. Sunday so, all told, the drive was 15 hours. It was nice being able to zip through Portland on I-5 late at night, rather than doing the stop-and-go on I-205 during the day. 'Missed going to Fry's in Wilsonville, though.

I just got all my junk unpacked and the suitcase put away (wife was on my case!)...

I was jealous after seeing two huge Fry's stores on the way from Sacramento to Rocklin... Especially, now that our CompUSA is closed, it'd be really nice to have one here on the East Coast...

    Hi All;

Wonderful experience that UPEW! And the courtesy offered by our Parallax hosts was incredible..... on Sunday afternoon Ken found the time to take Ole Man Earl and myself to FRY's. Quite a place..... we have no such store in Canada. So Phil and Rayman, I understand your dismay not being able to stop at them on your way by.

    cheers,

It's my own fault. Ken told me how to get to a the Fry's in Rocklin on my way out of town; but I elected to go north on 65 to join 99, rather than south to join I-80, thence to I-5. I would've spent way too much on stuff I didn't really need anyway! smile.gif

That's a long haul. Still, that means I can do it from PDX in maybe 13 hours. That is possible, and I never thought about driving down. Truth is, the flight back took quite some time. That was San Jose though. Flying into and out of SAC from PDX is less than $100. Still, 2 hours on the plane, 2 hours to get ready to get on the plane, limited packing options, 30 min to rent car, etc... kind of adds up.

Probably takes 5 -6 hours average time spent traveling, assuming a good flight schedule out of SAC. So, double that and have freedom to boot! Maybe I'll drive next year. Would be no big deal to book a sleeper, cheap room somewhere north of SAC, take off in the evening from PDX, do an early morning check in somewhere, snooze, then drive in to Rocklin the day of.

I used to love to fly, but it's become so onerous these days. Ugh!!! Driving is longer, but better time spent overall, IMHO.

You know, I'm in WA all the time for work. (Mostly Seattle, but sometimes Spokane, Tri-Cities.) Maybe we can meet once in a while Phil!

Back in the 80's I would go to Fry's in Sunnyvale on Oakmead Parkway when Avalon Apartments was a field and you could see Intel and Nortel across the freeway.

It was the best place in the world. No where else that I know of could one find an IBM-PC XT clone, Ho-Ho's, toothpaste, Flux, National Geographic, and 74LS161 chips in the same store.

Funny, at the time I worked for Link Flight Simulation. Today the Sunnyvale Fry's is in the old Link building (my office was where the Cafe' registers are now and the motherboard sit on the old SR71 simulator site).

BTW @potatohead, it took me less than 2 hours to get home using 80 on Monday morning.

    potatohead,

I think more like 11 hours Rocklin -> Portland. It takes me 4 hours from Portland to home on the Olympic Peninsula. If you ever make to this side of the Sound, let me know!

Flying used to be fun, but not anymore. I think the solution is to remove the passenger cabins altogether, substituting one-person "pods" in their place. Passengers would be stuffed with their luggage into their pods, anaesthetized (perhaps via hydrogen sulfide gas, which can induce a reversible state of suspended animation), and bulk loaded into the now-larger cargo hold. Upon arrival at their destination, they'd be revived and sent on their way. It'd be a win-win for all concerned: no passenger discomfort, no awareness of endless flight delays, no in-flight services needed, no possibility of a hijacking, and dirt cheap tickets!

Yeah, I hit recreational traffic. Tried 5 out of SAC and about 10 minutes down the road it was a wall of cars. I had already driven 80 several times in the past. Thought the trip down I-5 would just be different. Well, it was! Doubled back onto 80, and it was just hit and miss all the way in to San Jose. I made my flight, and it was a short one too. All good. I actually slept on that one! Those are the best flights.

I've thought many times of hanging a sign around my neck. "If you think I'm sleeping, let's leave it that way!".

Potato: [finally scores that in-flight, cramped, window seat of last hope sleep!]

    Steward(ess): sir, Sir!, SIR!

    Potato: WTF ?!?

Steward(ess): ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT ANYTHING?

    Potato: Well, I do now!

    Ugh...

Fry's is great. I'm not far from the Wilsonville one here. I go once a month or so.

After driving around in CA, Oregon always seems so old and pokey!

    Will do Phil.

Before I decided to do school full time, I worked for a company in Indiana. I think in 2007 alone, I flew 43 weekends to do a job SOMEWHERE in the states.

During those countless hours in the airport, waiting and waiting, I think I came to the exact conclusion as you did. Aside from the occasional beverage in flight, we are already treated like cattle. Why not take it to the next level, but reduce the discomfort by knocking the passengers out, and tucking them safely away?

    Great idea.

Well, stewardess if you offer me something warm and lumpy I'll take it .... Hot chocolate and a pillow sir ?

    Glad you made your flight.

My average speed from Rocklin to San Jose was a little too high. I got lucky and found a little red C6 Corvette to follow most of the way (cops would get him before me at 82 mph :) Poking around in Oregon reminds me of watching a farmer turn right :) Tractor influence I guess, but I was always amazed watching several of them get in the left lane before the turn (and most were in their pickups :). Then you have the leapfrog gang where no one wants to stay in the fast lane too long, but everybody wants to get there first :)
