Robolympics Medal

Is there any reason why the Robolympics medal uses an incredibly rare and hard·to get battery (CR123A)?

Does it require the battery for any special reason or can any 5-6 volt source work for it?

Edit: I moved this from the SX forum because I figured this one's better suited for this question.

I've tried two shops with no luck on the CR123A yet.

It's 3 volts, yes, according to wikipedia... but there are two of them in the medal.

I can swap it over to AAs but I needed to know if there was any special reason the 123As were used... does the circuit require exactly 6 volts? Or is there
some feature of a lithium battery that I don't know of that it needs?

In other words, I'm just being cautious.

if you swap to AA's you will need 4 aa's instead of the 2 123's
and yes. radio shack and walmart and CVS and target and such should carry them

You won't easily find CR123 batteries if you live far from civilization, but they are fairly common. Walmart stocks them (look in the photo dept.), and any other large chain including drugstores such as Walgreen's, Radio Shack, etc. should have them (they do tend to be very over-priced in some stores though).

I went ahead and disconnected the battery holders on the back of the medal and soldered on some wires.

I have a 6volt wall wart I can use for programming (Once I find something I can scrap for a female barrel-jack) and if I ever need to, I can use 5 AA rechargables
to reach the 5.5v or so the thing seems to require.

On a side note... Rechargables, when freshly charged, read at higher than 1.25v. Its actually enough to run a BOE or SX tech board on 4 for about 5-10 minutes!

I just bought a kit that has a Medal included. I looked at it for a long time, trying to figure out the battery.
I checked the Parallax website, only to find that discontinued items are not supported... [Bummer]

I had read in "Nuts and Volts" that the forums are a great place to get info, so... Here I Am... :)

Thanks, Ugha, for the battery number and specs.
I'll get some at Wal-Mart tomorrow, then... IT'S PLAY TIME... :)

What I ended up doing was desoldering the battery holders and run the thing off the +5volts on a BOE. It can also safely run on a regulated 6volt supply.

At least those are my experiences.

Would a 5pack of batteries for $4.30 do?

    And yes, that includes shipping...
(They have rechargeables in the same size, too)
