Larger LCD Screen with the propellor?

how well would a larger, say 7 inch screen work with the propellor? I assume you would have to boost the RAM a bit. Does anybody know of a good LCD Screen this size? Built in Speakers would be even better.
Thanks,

    Try DVD screens for cars.
I have a 9" monitor TV/VGA input, only TV works with the prop, not sure why VGA does not, maybe because it is 800x480?

You can also get 7" portable TV's with AV inputs.

I'm probably going to buy a dual monitor in car DVD, it gets me two 7" screens for the price of two 2.5" screens. I need to check they have normal AV inputs first though or at least try them and send them back if not.

    A.C.,

·· The physical size of the display doesn’t necessarily affect the memory requirements required to drive it.· In the case of video displays it is irrelevant.· The resolution of a VGA display will affect the memory requirements if you’re trying to use higher resolutions, but that doesn’t mean you have to.· I hope this helps.· Take care.

    I bought a pair of these http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-2/qid=1164910913/ref=sr_1_2/601-7436651-9012169?ie=UTF8&asin=B000J4FQW4
Ripped the screen out of the case and it's PERFECT. The screen has a nice plastic frame/case around it which holds the board on the back and looks/works great..

Also check out items like ebay auction: 140058481601

It takes VGA or AV(TV) so would be good for development. There seem to be lots of these on ebay, they are designed for "carputers".

This is what I just bought in the UK, two 7" screens and the DVD came to 80GBP when a 2.5" screen on ebay runs to about 40GBP anyway.

As you can see the screen moduled is quite self contained, the connections are video, 9v DC, 5v DC, brightness and colour. I may just set brightness and colour with fixed resistors rather than pots, not decided yet.

Thanks Sharpie for the inspiration to actually try.

Remember, all LCD monitors are not created equal!

Before you modify any display, test it first! Also make sure you can return it easily, if you don't like the way it looks!

The first 5.6" monitor I bought at Fry's Electronics several years ago ($80), always thought it had a crappy video display, but displays tv_text.spin very clearly. So I bought a cheapey off of ebay, about $54 delivered. As seen from the photo it can't display tv_text.spin as clear as the older one.

I ran across this Kawasaki universal 7" monitor at my local Target store for 79.99 USD. While they show it on line, it is only available in their stores. It has built in speakers and it has good video quality.

Where did you get the screens from? I'm also in the UK and could use a couple of small screens for my projects.

Another option, if you can find one, is the old Playstation Portable screen. Its a 5" screen with built in speakers and can accept composite video, or VGA with a little bit of hacking. They're pretty cheap too.

    Hope that helps

I got them from Argos, you get two screens a dvd player and a carry bag for 80 quid. The price in the paper catalogue is out of date by the way.

You might want to wait until I get one up and running in its new format before buying, they are exculded from the 16 day guarentee, presumably because people bought them, went on holiday with them and then took them back.

    Hi All.

Here in Melbourne Down under OZ you can buy a neat 34CM TV from the Aldi stores for $89.00
Should work well with the Propeller ...... http://www.aldi.com.au/
    Built in sound as well

In US dollars that would be about $60.00 and in GBP probably about $35.00
I reckon great value Going to get one tomorrow for sure..to test it

Well the screen works in this semi hot wired mode, it is still getting 5v, 9v and levels for brightness and colour from the main board but video is comming straight from the prop.

The 9v connections is a little strange to me on a 12v system, when I measure it I get 7v anyway. What are the chances that it will run on 12v OK? That would save a regulator.

    The control inputs are:

    colour: 2-3v range
    Brightness: 1.6-2.6v range
    GND
    +5v
Widescreen: 0v=wide and 0.7v=normal Probably a transistor base drop?
on/off: This doesn't seem to change.

p.s. I had to put the prop in Pal mode to get colour, this is probably a UK model specific thing.

Did you use the module on its own or did you use the other PCB as well?

    Any info appreciated.

I used the module in the plastic bezel, with the pc board attached on the back still.. Works great.·

So you had the screen as shown but did you still have the other PCB with the sound etc still attached, the PCB that is not shown in my picture?

No, I left all of that disconnected since it seems to work very well without having to adjust anything such as the color/brightness, etc.· And wasn't really interested in audio.

So are you running it on 9v or did you try it on 12v?

I am actually running it on 7.5v... If I remember (been a few months) that's what I picked up on the supply pin when it was in the original casing.. I'm pretty sure I spotted a 5v regulator on the board which probably drives the logic, but I'm guessing the backlight needs more..

Well on the other board that has the sound stuff the line is marked as 9v, this is definately for the back light I think. But when I measured I also saw about 7.5v which is a weird voltage if ever there was one. My module has a seperate connection for the 5v. Oh well I might try 12 and see what happens I don't want to mess around with yet more regulators if I can help it.
