The most obvious point would be number of signals needed. Parallel could take up to 8 'data' lines plus 3 control lines. Serial could be as few as 1 line.
So for applications where there are few I/O remaining, the serial i/f would be in order.
I've not yet used serial LCDs, quite expensive. But they are relatively slow, so parallel isn't required.
