i just got the bs2e for christmas and im having some trouble with it
and i was hoping that i could get some hepl from someone here.
i got the carpet rover 2 from lynxmotion, i soldered together the
entire board, there arent any solder bridges or cold solders. i used
the serial cable that was provided with the kit, i tried using both
the dos and win v1.096 download programs. in the windows version i
set the default stamp mode to bs2e. i tried downloading a program
with both versions of the program and i tried to identify the stamp.
in the windows version it said stamp found but not responding check
battery supply. with the dos version it said hardware not found. i
tried changing the battery but that didn't help and ive check the
connections, they all seem fine to me. im running win 98 if that
helps any. is there something besides the battery thats causing this
problem or is it definately the power? is there anything i can do?
please help, thanks

Well, here are a few things to try:

1) Boot to MSDOS mode and try the MSDOS program. Don't just open a DOS
window, either "Exit to MSDOS" or Boot and Press F8 and pick command prompt
only.

2) Check to see if you have any other program that might be using your COM
port or a complimentary COM port. For example, Palm pilot and Windows CE
sync software often holds the port open. If you are using COM1 for a
mouse/modem, you can't use COM3 (and vice versa). Same holds for COM2/4.

3) Make sure the ATN line is connected with either a straight line to the
DB9 or a capacitor.

4) Do you have pins 6/7 of the DB9 shorted together?

That will get you started. Let us know.

thanks for the advice but it didn't work
I tried the ms-dos mode, it said hardware not detected.
I checked and theres nothing using com2/4 as far as i can tell only a
modem using com1 so that shouldn't be the problem right?
As far as I can tell, I'm new to this and fairly foggy about it, the
ATN line is directly connected to DB9 by the board's design.
Also as far as i can tell pins 6/7 aren't shorted together
I'm sorry for the trouble but I'm brand new to this and don't
completely understand it yet and I really really appreciate the help.
Any further help would be appreciated, thanks

Hi Jammer,

Here are a couple more things for troubleshooting. The default stamp
mode may not do the trick. Be sure the program has the ".bse"
extension, and/or that it starts with the directive:
'{$STAMP BS2e}

The DOS software has to be STAMP2e.exe. Pins 6 and 7 do have to be
connected together on the DB9 for the software to automatically find
which port the stamp is connected to. Or you can start the dos
software with a com port preference:
stamp2e /1
for com1.

No joy? Do you have a voltmeter? Measure the voltages with the (+)
probe on pins 24, 23, 22, and 21 of the BS2e module. All with
respect to Vss. Also with the serial cable connected, measure the
voltages on pins 1,2,3 and 4 of the BS2e module. What do you find?

Ok, thank you for your help.
I got a volt meter and tested the pins of the BS2e module. When i
tested the pins that went to the DB9 (1,2,3,4 I am reading the
diagram properly right?) the volt meter did jump and stay there, so
that's ok right? I think my volt meter just isn't sensitive enough
(2.5v). When I tested pins 24, 23, 22, 21 (pwr, gnd, res, +5v again
if I'm reading the diagram properly) there was no power at all going
to the module. This means that there is a problem before the module
and the power can't get there right? Once again if I'm reading the
diagram correctly, then power goes from the battery, to the i/o pins,
and then into the module. So I figured I should trace the power to
see where it stops. There power goes through c1 and VR1 also there is
power going through c4 and i/o pins 0,1,2,3 (servo pins)beyond that
im not sure.
Any more help is appreciated, thank you.

opps, i forgot to include in the last message that because there is
no power going through the stamp then trying to run and fix the
program end won't help, right? Also pins 6 and 7 of the DB9 are
connected as best as i can tell
thanks

Hi Jammer,

There will definitely have to be power to the BS2e module before it
can be programmed.

I took a look at the Lynxmotion page, but they do not have a
schematic posted there, so I can't help you much with particulars.
This was a kit right?

For troubleshooting, the (-) lead of the voltmeter goes to a ground,
or common terminal, and then the (+) lead carefully touches pin 21 on
the BS2e. You say the voltmeter reads zero? Ahh. Be sure the BS2e is
in the socket with pin 1 oriented correctly? It looks to me like this
kit uses separate 9 volt and 6 volt power supplies for the servos and
for the electronics. You have the 9 v supply connected, right? If
you can't figure it out, this would be a good time to test out
Lynxmotion's tech support!

good luck,

Neil writes: That modem is it plug and play?, or the older
type with jumpers that you set for the port?

If it is the older style, then change the com port settings.

Also, if your using a mouse use PS/2 port, don't use any other
ports while your troubleshooting.

Free them up as much as possible, even it means taking your
hardware off the ports, then you can put them back or reinstall the
drivers for them later.

Inside windows 95 or 98 go to your system settings inside the control
panel if your using the DOS program within the shell of windows.

Make sure that inside the "Device Manager" you don't have a "?" or
"!" beside any of your hardware, try and rule out conflicts or drivers
that windows is looking for, then look to see if your ports are
working properly.

Check to see your com is using [8 Data bits, no Parity, and one stop
bit]

Last thing to do is to check the serial cable connections, and the
cable, I can remember times, spending hours trying fix something, and
finding out later that the cable is bad.

If your really not good at troubleshooting, then short pins 6 and 7
together, then free up ports before hooking up your stamp board,
then everthing should work. If if find that it does it after you
reinstall your hardware, then your computer might be using the
same "interrupts"
