ROS TurtleBot Platform

Hi everyone,

Has anyone heard anything about this TurtleBot 3 platform that runs ROS?

It looks like a neat way to learn ROS and integrates LIDAR and an IMU with the capability to do SLAM, obstacle detection and avoidance, autonomous navigation, etc.

What are your thoughts?

It looks similar to the Seeed Studios PRLIDAR kit.

These Willow Garage-based platforms are always nice, but they're pricey and beyond the reach of most hobbyists working on their own. Erco would probably be interested if the price were $14.76 direct from China, shipping included.

There are some LIDARs coming down the pike that, in quantity, are expected to be $100 to $250. So it's happening.

Thanks for all the info guys. I've been able to convince my boss to purchase a few of these platforms for our group to be able to play with and learn ROS. He even proposed the idea of starting a robotics competition at work to see whose robot navigates a maze quicker. Exciting stuff.

These don't have a great range, though they are available now. The new Velodyne units coming next year are slated to be about $200, have much greater range (200 meters), and designed for self-driving autos. They're not 360 degree, though.
