Relatively cheap, this is the first time I've seen them. I ordered one. Maybe they'll plummet in price as the stepper motors and ultrasonic sensors did over the next few months.
Looks to be a ball bearing unit. Might be useful on a robot as a non-powered idler wheel to measure distance for dead reckoning, I reckon.

I wonder why, in the photo, they show the voltage range 5-24 and in the text description 7-24? Saw that occurrence in more than one auction listing of those.
I got mine about 10 days ago, but didn't want to hook them up without a wiring diagram or description, since the Ebay description reads, "Note: AB two-phase outputs must not be connected directly to the power supply VCC, otherwise, they will burn the output transistor." Several unanswered emails from the seller later, I just hooked it up tonight using nothing but "common sense". Wires are red, black, green and white. So naturally I put the red to +5V, black to ground, and green and white to Stamp inputs with 10K pullup resistors (open collector). Nothing, no function at all.
Then I translated the Chinese characters on the encoder label per a color chart I found online (attached). If you take a second, you can look at the two attached photos and match the colors pretty easily. DOH! WHITE goes to Vcc (+5V) and red/green are the encoder outputs, and black is ground. Fortunately I didn't release any magic smoke and everything works fine. I'll nab a second unit when I find a deal on them to get a diff drive chassis going.
