Just curious, how big is the actual piece of wafer inside a Propeller DIP?

  No idea how big the chip is but my bet is that you could take a hacksaw to the DIP Prop and remove 6 pins from the tail end and still have a working Prop.

  The die is 7.3mm x 7.3mm, as I recall.

  Right now, Jeff will be measuring from the center of the chip half of 7.3mm and you know, I can hear sawing in the workshop...

  You could certainly cut it down, but need the I2C boot pins. Also you can get 0.6" to 0.3" width converters, so something like a DIP-24s with 16 GPIO could me made (losing P8-23)

  I counted the pins in Tubular's photo, and it's possible to make a DIP-24 version without disturbing the die. For safety, just make sure the border is the same on the cut side as the notch.
  
  It's fortuitous that the VSS and VDD pins line up where they do!

  Considering that the same die would be used, there would be very little cost advantage, so I'm not sure I see why it would really be needed.
  
  If space is the concern you can go smaller using the other packages and still have full pinout.
