AV transmitter range?

Hi-
My apologies if this is in the wrong place:o
I have a 1W 2.4 Ghz video transmitter from Range Video. With stock (what look like 2dBi gain rubber duck) antennas my useful range is barely 200 meters (no obstructions) when I put the transmitter on a RC car and have the receiver (which is a Lawmate unit, I believe) on the windowsill on the 2nd floor. My question is if this is normal range without higher gain antennas and what range could I expect if I used an 18dBi patch? The range is nowhere near the advertised one, even with these antennas.
Thanks

Raf

You've got to play the game.
You can't win.
You can't break even, except on a very cold day.
It doesn't get that cold.

Ditto, a watt is a lot of power. Most WiFi units use the same band and power on the order of 1/2 to 1W and, in open air, could certainly get a range of 200 meters, more typically twice that.
