Getting Stamp to communicate with computer

I just got the board of education and the Basic Stamp Discovery Kit and I cannot get the the Stamp to communicate with a computer (i've tried 3). When I do run -> Identify, I get Loopback =yes, and Echo=yes, and the com. port number is shown. But not the Stamp DEvice Type.
I went through the troubleshooting and tried to disable the FIFO Buffer. On the first two computers (Windows XP) I could not locate that check box to turn off. On the 3rd computer (older) I had the same results and was able to get diable the FIFO buffer, but still got did not get the Stamp to communicate.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Yes it's getting power, yes the Stamp is correctly installed, I'm using the serial cable that came with the kit, . I tried it with and without the USB/serial converter.
thanks,

Are you using a 9-volt battery which you've measured its voltage while in-circuit? Or are you using a wall-wart AC to DC adapter of 7.5 volts output or higher?
