Lead

The metal associated with resistors, capacitors, transistors, etc. is very stiff and very good for inserting components onto my BoeBot's breadboard. I enjoy creating new gadgets and experiments and spend lots of time with this hobby. But I'd sure like to know what this metal is, and I hope it's not Lead. Appreciate your comments. Thanks.

In the very recent past, almost all electronic components contained lead. However, most components purchased new within the past year from mainline distributors should be lead-free. This is due to the "Reduction of Hazardous Substances" (RoHS) requirements initiated by the European Union. RoHS-compliant parts should be marked as such or indicated thus on the invoice or packing slip. If not, you can contact your parts provider for documentation. Parts purchased in certain states (e.g. California) are required by law to reveal their lead content with a warning on either the package or the sales documentation. Outside of these conditions, it's probably safest to assume that the parts contain lead and proceed accordingly.

My personal opinion is that, unless small children are being exposed, there's little personal hazard from exposure to leaded electronic components. As long as you follow common-sense hygiene rules (i.e. keep the parts out of your mouth, wash your hands before handling food, etc.), you should be okay.
