Optical interrupter

I am trying to figure out how to use this optical interrupter I have, but I cannot figure how to hook it up correctly.

I found a data sheet http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/H2/H21LOB.pdf

I tried hooking it up like this
                                                              5v
1 -5v--/\/\/\----|  |-------(3)------------------|
                       |  |                                   \
                       |  |                                   /
                       |  |                                   \
                       |  |                                   /
                       |  |--------(4)----------------------------- signal out
2  --gnd---------|  |--------(5)------gnd



But I get 5v on Vout regardless if it is being interrupted or not. Any advice?

    What i would do is use·the test circuit That on the data sheat and se what happens·if this will work for you

    From the look of it you can not just hook a volt meter to the output pin only from what i can see from figure 9 on the data sheat this at the bottom of the data sheat

    I hope that this will help you

    R 1 = 300Ω
    R 2 = 180Ω

    my problem was I was using to big of a resistor for the diode side, I guess I was not letting enough current flow through it. It works now the way I expected it to.
