Using SX Key with usb to serial converter

As with most laptops now days they don't have serial ports. I purchased a usb to serial converter and started to work with my SX Key to program etc. Needless to say the results were lacking. Compiling, running, reading, programming, all failed numerous times before success. Debug never successful. SX Key responded with communication errors of different integer numbers several times and even that sx key was not found on com port etc. Eventually would succeed.

I tried several drivers for the device and adjusting the port speed and buffers still about the same response.

Long story short. I do understand that the SX Key requires 12V to program but has anyone had any success with the devices if so which model?

Also is there any chance of having SX Key with usb connection for the future?

Tanks,

JJ

Many of use are successfully using the Parallax USB-to-Serial adpater with the SX-Key; I use it day in and day out -- but I have the correct (FTDI) drivers installed. The fact is that not all USB-to-Serial adapters are equal, and the one Parallax makes is not only inexpensive, it seems bullet-proof.

Parallax is working on a USB-SXKey (I've seen the prototype), but have not announced a release date (and won't until they know they can build and ship it).

Hi, i've seen the SX-key too, but the RS-232 version is in END OF LIFE,·so what·i need to programm the SX28 chip?
It seems that the SX-BLITZ it is the usb version of SX-KEY, am I wrong?

Can I use something else other than SX-key or SX-BLITZ to program my chip?

    Thanks Alessadro (Roma,IT).

The Bliitz is a programmer only; it cannot provide a clock required for running and debugging the SX.

He still leaves a good question unanswered -- what happens when the SX-Key is really at end of life? Is there a USB replacement in the works or ?? I can't imagine Parallax would *only* offer the Blitz (in any configuration) from that point forward. I *was* just wondering about this and debating whether or not to snatch up a few extra Keys.

I discovered also that it is impossible·(or quite hard!)·to made it at home!

    Any suggestion?

    You are great, thanks!

It looks like it is still available. It's only "End Of Life" because the USB version will take it's place.

Here is the link to it: http://www.parallax.com/Store/Microcontrollers/BASICStampModules/tabid/134/txtSearch/sx-key/List/1/catpageindex/2/ProductID/369/Default.aspx?SortField=ProductName%2cProductName
