Project guidance

I am new to electronics, and am trying to do a project with a foam rc jet. The idea I have is to have the jet semi autonomous. What I mean by semi is when the plane gets out of range the bs2 will take over, and fly back into range of the remote control. I plan on using the gps,tri-accelrometer ,ping sensor xbee pro modules,·and·2 bs2p's for right now. Later I will upgrade to the propeller and make it fully autonomous with aerial vision. I am wondering anyone know of references I can use to research, and expand my knowledge, and point me in the right direction? Thanks
