My brother and I share the direct tv through a splitter. The box is in my room tho so he cant change the channel to well from his room, can I make a repeater for IR to put in his room and and a transmitter in my room aimed at the box. That way he can change the channel from his room.

true, but it got horrible reviews. I will need to make one unless I can find one that is better quality.

FYI if you make one it will probably work worse. No offense intented, but it sounds tricky and usually a commercial product has better firmware. If you are doing this for a learning experience, then it might be worth it.

Xantech makes the bets stuff for IR repeating. http://xantech.com/products/ir_products.htm# Much of the products are available at Smarthome.com. Not the cheapest but good selection. If you've run coax to the second location you can use Xantech 172-94 kit. http://www.smarthome.com/8197.html

If your not opposed to running wire or are not using coax you can go this route. You'll need 1 - CB12 connecting block $15, 1 - 291-10 IR Receiver $45, 1 - IR emitter $4.50 - $15.00 (buy the house brand they are all the same), and a 12 volt power supply $12. You may also need an extension wire for the receiver or emitter, item 8186 at smarthome $9.
