I am having problem setting the stampII sx.· when connecting the usb to serial port to the chip, the identification message replies that the loopback is no, but the program recognizes the presence of the microcontroller echo:yes.· Can someone tells me why the loopback is no.

"Loopback" detects that two pins in the RS-232 connector are connected by a jumper on the BOE board. If that signal is not being seen, either your cable is not connected, or you're not using a BOE board, or your USB to Serial adapter doesn't support those two pins.

I am using a radioshack usb to serial. I was told that parallax suports that cable. I must only configurate the serial part of the cable. what do you mean by BOE. I have used that chipset before only serial port connection and it worked fine back then. More details is needed to figure out what I must do...

i am not using a BOE board. I have my own custom board which is a bread board and homemade connection from serial to the board. I don't see where the problem is coming from because pin 6 and 7 are connected on my homemade connector. thanks

Right, could you give us more details? Like how are you connecting the serial cable to the chip? What are you using for power, and so on.

Also, how have you configured the reset circuit from DTR? The Stamp Editor needs this to ID and program the chip.

Look at the schematics for the Board of Education that you can download from the Parallax website.
It shows you the correct wiring for a serial connection to a Stamp. The Stamp manual also has a
diagram. Start with a circuit that is known to work and compare it to what you have.

Thank you gents for your help. My problem was with the cable. Line 6 on the serial cable was missing. I guess it came from a mouse. I created the jumper on the serial port itself and now i am able to communicate back and forth with the stamp. Again, thanks.
