distance question

Hi,
I'm planning a project where my sensors (ping, pir) will possibly be located a few (5 to 10) feet away from my BS2 or whatever micro controller I plan to use. Is there a rule of thumb or guideline as to how far away these (or any) sensor can be? And is there a way to get decent data with the sensors farther away?
Thanks,
Tony

The Ping))) has a range of about 2cm to 3m (or about .75" to 10')

Right, I understand that. But my Ping will be located on a bookshelf looking out of my cube and the Stamp will be in my desk about 10 feet away. The Ping will be looking out my door to tell me when people are approaching my cube and the Stamp will be telling a max7219 how far away said people are.
Since the Stamp and the Ping are not co-located I need to know how far away I can put it and still get reliable results, or what I need to do to the signal lines to get reliable results.
    Thanks.

As long as your communication is ok you can place your sensors anywhere you like!

10 feet will probably work. You need to use appropriate cable to keep the electrical noise level down. The cable used for ethernet would work since it has two twisted pairs in it. Use one twisted pair for +5V and ground and the other twisted pair for the signal line and ground.

I was thinking something like that, since then I could make a decent enclosure and use a cat5 jack for the hookup.

    thanks.
