It looks over-priced to me, though it looks like it would be cool.

Hi Every· One

I posted this because I was at BJ Wholesale Club where the ...>>>GE - Lights and Sounds of Christmas Show unit now i have to say that the sound is very

good it is not Real Loud The light show is pretty good now the price at BJ was·less but even at this price I do not know even at this price if would buy

one to take apart to see how GE put this together

·DFaust

It is very cool but I have to agree with it is·you over-priced

·Oldbitcollector

Plays 10 songs in the "Siberian" style and 10 Traditional Christmas carols

There is not a lot of difference in the "Traditional" vs "Siberian"

I·think is it is a nice· idea.gif

I think it's overpriced to us because it's something one of us could put together!

I don't htink they done anything too fancy....a timed trigger to music is probably all they've done; makes it appear like the sound triggers things.

Anyhow, good for people that want to put a small display on at home! I don't think the $ is bad.

Wow, that's the idea I'm working on now.· Funny, pretty cheap when you consider the time you'd have involved with making something like this and all the debugging.

I'd be pissed if I was the guy who did this a few years ago to that Trans Siberian Orchestra song. He had a really popular original idea that he might have been able to keep original for years to come, but GE went ahead and mass produced it. Now every person who over-decorates for Christmas will do the same exact thing, without having any idea how it's done.
No offense to those who use it, it's fair game now. But I think it should have stayed a hobbyist project prop that shows some electronics knowledge as well as looking awesome.

Compared to $800 for an 8 circuit its really cheap.
And it works, I just wish the music could be changed.
But overall, hell of a good deal. The famous youtube/MillerLite
house used 16 circuits, about 1200 for that controller.

What controller were they using?

I purchased 4 NOMA instant light shows on Ebay & am very pleased. I see this GE
Light & Sounds thing going on sale now & would like to run it with light effects only,
no music. Can the speaker be easily disconnected from the unit & can I select
effects like chasing, fades, etc?
thanks, Kathy

The guy who did the Trans Siberian Orchestra was Carson Williams. He was using light controllers made by Light-O-Rama (www.lightorama.com).

I'm working on a low voltage version of this for use at work, since they won't let us plug in 30AMPs worth of lights wink.gif

SX chips will run the logic and timing. So, you can make your own with Parallax chips and parts! The only thing that will give you trouble is writing software to edit how the lights react to the music. I think that is the hardest part. Store the sequences on an EEProm chip, then play·the music·back off an MP3 board. If you divide the timing in to 10 frames per second, a 2 minute song will require about 1200 frames. If you want to run 16 circuits, you would need to store the bit pattens using 1200 words.

So a 24LC32A
(from Parallax - http://www.parallax.com/Store/Components/IntegratedCircuits/tabid/154/CategoryID/31/List/0/SortField/0/Level/a/ProductID/228/Default.aspx)
should be able to store about 3 songs per chip. Throw in a couple of IRL520-ND Mosfets for switching (Parallax-
http://www.parallax.com/Store/Components/IntegratedCircuits/tabid/154/CategoryID/31/List/0/SortField/0/catpageindex/3/Level/a/ProductID/389/Default.aspx)

or use a Darlington Array chip ( Parallax - http://www.parallax.com/Store/Components/IntegratedCircuits/tabid/154/CategoryID/31/List/0/SortField/0/catpageindex/4/Level/a/ProductID/211/Default.aspx)

and of course a serial to parallel chip(Parallax- http://www.parallax.com/Store/Components/IntegratedCircuits/tabid/154/CategoryID/31/List/0/SortField/0/catpageindex/1/Level/a/ProductID/229/Default.aspx)

Here is the one I'm running at the house, I'd love to run the same thing here at work using low voltage lights and little xmas trees on the walls of my cube. I'm also considering making a flat display that sticks to the outside of my cube walls and uses LED lights.

Now·you have a project to keep you busy until New Years!

Have fun,
Dan

I built an SX-based, 8-channel lamp controller: you can find it in the November issue of Nuts & Volts. It works like many commercial products (e.g., LOR) in that it expects lamp brightness values to be transmitted from a PC. The design allows you to string 16 boards together for a total of 128 channels. The software (Vixen -- www.vixenlights.com) is free, so you don't have to worry about that part if you want to do a PC-based show. The latest files can be downloaded from here:

If you want a short stand-alone show we (EFX-TEK) have a digital sequencer add-in for Vixen that simplifies the creation of lighting patterns (on and off only -- you have to run live for dimming). One of our customers use a Prop-2 (BS2) and relays to create a stand-alone light show for his home using the Vixen add-in.

I can't believe I forgot about that article. I have to go grab it now and start reading. I can always count on you to have the right answer. Now I have a year to get it all together and working. Need to start on the Halloween stuff next month, so maybe I can get double duty out of it too.

I need to post the Halloween stuff I did this year using pneumatics and Parallax chips and sensors.

Thanks JonnyMac!

Just picked up one of these for $30can (they were $100 pre-season...then dropped to $70 mid-season).

I'm gonna crack it open at some point to see what I can get in trouble with! ;)
