How to check if a microsoft key is for academic version or not ?

I purchased Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 from ebay. The seller said it is not an academic version, and it doesn't say academic on the case.
Does Microsoft have any way for me to tell if the CD-Key is for the retail version or for the Academic version ? I don't want to wait until I purchase the 2008 update only to not be able to install it because my 2005 cd-key is for the academic version.
I checked in Help->About but there was no mention either way.

Why don't you do one of Microsoft's labcast things to get a 'free' (you have to pay s&h) complimentary copy of vs 2005 just to be sure. I believe it says it expired on July 2007, but you could still try since it seems the site is still up. www.microsoft.com/business/vb2005upgrade/offers.mspx .
