Need Solenoids

Does anyone know a good place to order solenoids that will work well with Basic Stamps?

The more specs provided the better.

I'm looking for the linear style, to be used in a low-force friction braking system.

    Aaron,

The specifications are usually defined by the project designer. There’s no way for anyone to provide you with specifications for a Solenoid for which they do not know the intended application. If I were in your shoes I would be determining the supply voltage I have available, whether I need push/pull and the duty cycle (constant/intermittent) and then look for some that meet this criteria. It is from there that you will then get the coil impedance, power dissipation, etc. If at that point you need help with a source or driver circuit then others would be able to help. Take care.

I guess I'm just looking for a good website to order them from. Most of the ones I have found are for OEM applications and require large quantity purchases.

The particular application I"m looking for is for a wedge-based friction braking system on a rotating shaft. So I would need variable output, but I shouldn't need too much pressure.

The specs I'm looking for are things like:
    -voltage ranges
-power consumption at various duty cycles
-maximum pressure output at a given voltage
    -length of actuator travel

    Aaron -

I'm not sure you're asking for what you really want. I suspect you're looking for either an electrically operated brake or clutch. Which is proper for your application?

    Regards,

If you're looking for something cheap, try the surplus houses. Googling solenoid surplus will bring up a host of candidates.
