Depends, but if it is a really good deal, sure... who can't pass up a great opportunity!

Sure, but I can't think of any stores in the Philadelphia area that would be applicable.· There is that robot store in Manhattan... perhaps them?

Propeller Education kits
Basic STAMPs
No, the only Parallax product currently in stock in my local Radio Shacks are the "What is a Microcontroller" kit
Parallax or Ebay
Local, the higher markups and local taxes are usually offset by the lack of shipping charges, AND, I'll have it the same day. Impulse buying may lead to higher sales as well. As someone said in another thread...."I dare anyone to hold a Ping))) in their hands and leave the store with out one!"

2) Propeller products (and accessories), Stamp Homework boards to cover both entry-level and experienced users
3) I'm personally pretty flush with Parallax products at this time, but I can imagine buying some sensors and possibly a Propeller Protoboard in the future
4) The RadioShacks in this area have no Parallax products other than the What's a Microcontroller? kit and I have no experience with Fry's.
5) I have usually bought Parallax products from Parallax directly.
6) I would buy locally. I like to encourage local support of hobbies.
7) I usually would buy something even if the price is not reduced (if I think I need it). I may decide I can't justify the cost normally and change my mind later if the price is reduced.
8) I'm not sure what other stores would be appropriate here for stocking Parallax products. RadioShack is a good choice.
The gives shoppers the choice of 2 paths, STAMP or Propeller.
It will get some of the requisite hardware into their hands (PropPlug) so that they can use the Proto Boards that they will also hopefully carry soon (ok, a guy can wish)

1. What kinds of Parallax products would you be interested in purchasing from RadioShack stores?
Mostly supporting modules that I suddenly have an immediate need for and don't want to pay additional shipping.
But, I imagne that others will eventually want WHAM and BOEbot and Scribller [maybe as the gift season approaches] as word gets out that you built your gizmo with parts from Radio Shack.
Limited product line is only a way to get started. There is also room for complimentry non-Parallax components and tools. Parallax enjoys good relations with companies like Spark Fun and people like Bean because sales go both ways. It is a network of different flavors and levels, no one can supply all of it. Parallax does what it does best and welcomes collaboration.
2. What new Parallax products would you like to see in these stores?
Penguin, but I doubt it is a good item to stock for most of Radio Shacks customers as you need to acquire some knowledge to enjoy it -- like fine wine. Unlike the BOEbot, which is quite open in architecture, the Penguin is a nearly complete device package. The joy is in programing it more than building it, changing the set up, and reinventing what it can do.
For example, you can't take RadioShacks HumVee parts and add them to the Penguin. But there are a lot of people adapting the RS HumVee Tracks to the BOEbot. I've even considered paying shipping to Taiwan, just to cannibalize one for my BOEbot.
Motor controllers and motor/wheel/mount sets. It is about control and motion. Just the motor - without the wheel and with the mount really bogs down the sales.
3. Which products specifically? This question is a bit redundant. See the entires above.
I forgot to say Books above.
One of the things I truly enjoy about Parallax is that the books do more than tersely support a product, they inform and they inspire.
For instance,
Not only does the PBasic manual, under FREQOUT, provide an explanation of how to output a tone, it provides the frequency of the scale, provides the schmatic for interfacing to an amp, provide the low pass filter schematic to improve quality. Any other vendor would just tell you how to make the tone. You would have to buy 3 other books and have a cluttered table while building.
Of course, some may say 'That is too technical.' Certian sections of the text are lengthy. But the hobby is all technical. The extra info makes it fun and it is percieved as a huge increase in value. Also, the graphics are quite clear and someone will immediately revise an errata if you mention it. Many vendors, just write one document and never fix the errors [they never grow poplular either].
4. Are you happy with the Parallax product selection currently offered at RadioShack and Fry’s?
Wouldn't really know, but I have my doubts that I would be satisfied as the store's computer decides what to restock by what moves quickly. These days, nothing is carried very long that does move. But, it is hard to predict what components and configuration will suddenly be useful and popular as the users are creatively engaged with the configuration. Even Parallax has to backorder some items. But it sustains availability of the core items.
Please note - This is a special dilemma of this particular market. The same thing is involved in all hobby/craft markets due the end user's creativity.
5. Where do you usually buy Parallax products?
a. Distributors - NO
Why pay a distributor a premium price for less support, when it still have to pay extra shipping and wait for the order? I use Parallax on-line resources regularly, so I am loyal to them.
b. Parallax.com YES
And, I download the texts which are as important as the products. Maybe Parallax should offer a CD pack especially for RadioShack newcomers that are not aware of how good the 'Parallax On-Line' resources are.
c. Local stores (RadioShack, Fry’s) NOT available in Taiwan
6. Would you rather buy from a local store or from the internet?
I'd rather buy locally in Tawian, but that may take years. Even then, Parallax would have to produce an all Chinese package and document for stores to carry product.
As it is, I think the only possible outlet in Kaohsiung would be the National Kaohsiung Science and Technology Museaum [it is the 2nd largest in the world!] AND people would have to at least see the Chinese documentation with the English documentation in order to commit. Some people would see it as a way to improve their English language skills [a high priority in Asia].
7. Do you buy products that you usually do not buy when the price has been reduced?
Yes, and Chinese often won't buy anything that isn't reduced from the sticker price.
And I also buy products that I haven't intended to when I physically see them. Suddenly I am struck with insight into why I need that product.
8. Would you like to see Parallax products in other retail stores? If so, which ones?
FAO-Schwartz, NYC, NY. for Christmas.
If you can sell the WHAM, the BOEbot, Sumo, and the Scribbler there, many more retail outlets would follow during the holiday season.
Tourist gift outlets, such as...
The Acadamy of Sciences Museaum, San Francisco, California [in Golden Gate Park] WHAM, BOEbot, Sumo, Scribbler
The Exploratorium, San Francisco, California [in the Marina District]WHAM, BOEbot, Sumo, Scribbler
And of course,
Sharper Image [the Penguin for Christmas] (Face up to the reality that it is really a gadget store.)

1. What kinds of Parallax products would you be interested in purchasing from RadioShack stores?
Sensors, servos, communication components, robotics, LCDs: all the fun project stuff.
2. What new Parallax products would you like to see in these stores?
Probably both Prop and BS, but the Propeller is more revolutionary and cheaper so if I had to choose, I'd choose the Prop.
3. Which products specifically?
Prop proto board, Propeller Education Kit, all the Text/Kit combos (Process Control, IR Control, Understanding Signals, etc.), the USB Oscilloscope, and lots of accessories so when someone's in the middle of a project and needs something, they know they can pop on down to Radio Shack.
4. Are you happy with the Parallax product selection currently offered at RadioShack and Fry’s?
Absolutely not! I don't know about Fry's, but Radio Shack only carries WAM. That's too bad because once someone finishes WAM, their appetite is whetted for more.
5. Where do you usually buy Parallax products?
Either parallax.com or from Parallax on eBay.
6. Would you rather buy from a local store or from the internet?
I'd like to be able to buy from a local store so I could get things quicker, but there's no way they can stock everything someone would need. Unless, of course you live next to Jameco or Mouser.
7. Do you buy products that you usually do not buy when the price has been reduced?
I have bought a few things from Parallax when they've had a sale.
8. Would you like to see Parallax products in other retail stores? If so, which ones?
Aside from Radio Shack, there aren't many stores near me that would carry hobbyist electronics. Perhaps places that cater to R/C hobbyists.
I wish you luck in getting more Parallax goodies into Radio Shack. Unfortunately, with their change of focus from the tinkerer/maker/hobbyist to the consumer, I've got to imagine you have your work cut out for you.

What would be cool, however, would be if Parallax offered an RS only kit of some sort, that you could get ONLY through RS. Make it some sort of robotics or combo kit, with beefier specs than a BS2 kit, at a reasonable price. Maybe aq hybrid RC-bot type of thing, with a manual adapted from the current manuals.
But the key is to make it something that would appeal to people, and ONLY available at RS. This eliminates the competition for RS, which is greater incentive for them to carry the product.
Here's a good example of an RS branded item that differs enough from the norm to make it unique, with RS being the place to get it: www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2104745&cp

Sensors (all kinds), bread board and proto board development kits (e.g. BOE, SX Tech, Prop Dev, etc.), continuous rotation servos, chips
2. What new Parallax products would you like to see in these stores?
Propeller Products
Yes, esp. DIP chips for the late evening desperate IC run
Basic Stamps
Yes, but would prefer SX DIPs -- they would be about the same price as a 555 timer at the Shack and a whole lot more useful.
3. Which products specifically?
Pings, SX DIP, Prop DIP, Stamp OEM DIPs, resonators, TAOS color sensor, the Panasonic IR detectors
4. Are you happy with the Parallax product selection currently offered at RadioShack and Fry’s?
A: no. B: no Fry's here. Never been there. Never really heard of it.
5. Where do you usually buy Parallax products?
a. Distributors
b. Parallax.com
(check)
c. Local stores (RadioShack, Fry’s)
6. Would you rather buy from a local store or from the internet?
Bigger ticket items probably from Parallax direct; the other stuff locally. Sometimes it's nice to buy something on a whim, or get it in 15 minutes, and there's Shack right down the street from here.
7. Do you buy products that you usually do not buy when the price has been reduced?
Sure. A deal is a deal.
8. Would you like to see Parallax products in other retail stores? If so, which ones?
Yeah, I'd like to get my SX and Stamp OEM chips at 7-11 at 2am, but can't think of any other place that would be appropriate. The only other supply houses here are the two big electronics (retail & wholesale) distributors, but they are strictkly 9-5 M-F, which can be problematic.

I would love to see more Parallax products in Radio Shack stores. There is actually a Radio Shack just down the screen from where I live (less than 1/2 mile) and could even walk there on a nice day. Unfortunately there aren't too many reasons to do so as their current selection of parts has been pretty lame. I do remember when they actually carried Archer kits and all sorts of parts.... If you started putting more of your products at Radio Shack it would give me a reason to stop in there more often. I'd still order things directly from Parallax but if i'm working on a project and just wanted something simple like a Ping sensor, QTI sensor, etc just to finish a project it would certianly be refreshing to just walk down the street and pickup the part I need instead of waiting for it. Having both options would be awesome!
2. What new Parallax products would you like to see in these stores?
- A good variety of the sensors you offer (Ping, QTI, Compass, TL230, PIR, etc)
- Parallax Servo's
- Propeller Protoboard
- Basic Stamps
- Any of the electronics components that complement the few parts that Radio Shack still carries. This would actually give someone a chance to build a project with only parts coming out of a Radio Shack store. It has been many years since that has happened!
- SX proto boards would be great too if they can take some more stuff. The problem with these is that if you put them in the store near me they wouldn't be able to keep them in stock
Heck, if they aren't sure just send one of everything to the Radio Shack Store on Mack Ave in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. I'll be happy.
3. Which products specifically?
- Everything... ok, if your going to make me choose then.....
- A good variety of the sensors you offer (Ping, QTI, Compass, TL230, PIR, etc)
I know I already mentioned this but I really want to be able to pick these up whenever I need them!
4. Are you happy with the Parallax product selection currently offered at RadioShack and Fry’s?
I'm happy that some things are there but so far i've only seen the whole starter kit on the shelf. You need to get more in there!
There isn't a Fry's anywhere near me. If you talk to the owners of Fry's tell them we need one in MI...
5. Where do you usually buy Parallax products?
Right from Parallax.com
6. Would you rather buy from a local store or from the internet?
Both! I am happy with buying direct but there is nothing like walking in a store and getting that last part you need to finish a project now. Besides, people will still buy direct since they will see what specials you are running and while they are there will probably just pickup more stuff. It would also be good exposure for Parallax to see their products in more stores. There are still quite a few Radio Shack stores aren't there?
7. Do you buy products that you usually do not buy when the price has been reduced?
It depends on the product. If it's something that looks cool but i've been on the fence about buying a sale on it may make the difference.
8. Would you like to see Parallax products in other retail stores? If so, which ones?
Unfortunately almost all the electronics stores around here (besides Radio Shack) are gone. There used to be: RS electronics, Laffette, Olsen Electronics, Lee's Surplus, etc on Gratiot Ave, Active Electronics in Troy, and many others. The only real electronics store left near me is Able Electronics on Harper Ave in St Clair Shores. They are awesome and have been kept alive by the Marine electronics. I always make sure to pop in there to get some odd resistors, caps, etc whenever I need something since they still have quite a bit of stuff and I want to see them stay open for a long time. I know I can get resistors a lot cheaper but if it's an odd value, etc it sure is a nice option to just drive over there and pickup some parts to finish whatever project I am working on now. Otherwise it becomes painful when you think you're almost done and everytime you turn around you need to place yet another order for parts to finish your project or repairs. If you are going to work with independent electronics stores besides huge chains I'll be glad to get the contact info for the guys over at Able. It would be cool to see your stuff in there too....
At least in my area the only stores that make sense to put your products in would be Radio Shack and local electronics shops. I just can't picture going into a WalMart (which I don't shop at) and seeing a Parallax product. That would seem weird.
Just my thoughts,
Robert
I'm not really happy with the stuff radio shack carries. I only go there for proto boards and IC sockets.
I buy all my Parallax stuff from the Parallax website.
I'd rather buy from a local store, this way I can see the thing before I buy it and I don't have to wait for it (I HATE ordering stuff for that reason).
In most cases I only buy the stuff I think I need, regardless of a price drop. Unless I've been looking at something for a while but it was a bit too expensive, then I'll but it at a reduced price.
The only other stores I'd think about finding something like this are hobby stores. I think they'd fit in nicely there, and might even redefine what a hobby store is.
If you would not mind I have a few more questions to ask.
Considering the future products from Parallax into RadioShack do you think it would be better to put
o Educational robots like (Penguin, Scribbler, Sumobots),
o Educational kits (Propeller kits, basic stamps kit, SX programming kit), or
o Basic outputs (LCD, Stand Servo’s, Continuous Servos, modules)?
· Would you describe customers of RadioShack as education oriented or entertainment oriented?
Thanks again,
Gino C.
1) RadioShack has certainly done a bit of business in the past with toys and toy-like devices. I don't know how successful they have been, but it certainly was a significant effort on their part for a few years. There is promise in having them carry some of these like the Sumobot. The Penguin is still pricey for what it does (as a sophisticated toy/ educational device) although that may change as books / tutorials come into existance.
2) Educational kits are potentially more important. The Basic Stamp "What's a Microcontroller?" kit is a great introduction to microcontrollers. The Propeller Protoboard may be a good base for experimentation and the Propeller Education Kit will be the replacement for "What's a Microcontroller? eventually. It would be useful to look at the sales volumes for "What's a Microcontroller?" over time and as RadioShack tries to support electronics as a hobby.
3) Basic parts (servos, displays, etc.) will be necessary to support the educational kits as customers try to do more sophisticated things with the controllers they buy.
4) I think there are two distinct groups of customers ... entertainment oriented ... and education oriented. If you go into a typical store, you will see a wall full of entertainment devices and a wall of cellphone/entertainment devices. In the back you will find the electronics hobby stuff which is the only education oriented area. People who already have interest in learning electronics / robotics / etc. know where to go to get things they need, sort of like their electronics hardware store. Those that are interested in entertainment will stay in the front and some may be enticed through seeing completed devices like the educational robots that can "do things" unattended in the store.
5) For many people, RadioShack and mail-order are the only sources of electronics components and RadioShack is everywhere. One thing that will be interesting is whether and how there might be advertising campaigns to make RadioShack again "the place to go for electronics supplies" as it was at one point.
Yes, thinking back to when I was a child, and even recently, RadioShack has always been known for their technology based toys. Robots, etc. I bet a large percentage of forum members own, or have once owned their popular Armatron robotic arm. Parallax's robotic products would be a perfect compliment.
Please don't use the word "or" we want both!
Maybe skip the servos though. We have a local hooby shop that sells RC cars, planes, etc. They have servos at a more reasonable price than RadioShack is likely to charge. I think the Propeller Education kit is a perfect product for the radioshack crowd. If/when the Labs are available in print form, like the "What is a Microcontroller" text, you'd have the perfect product.
Some of both. But even the "entertainment" products that Parallax offers, are still educational.
