IC Clips??

My electronics knowledge is shocking so sorry if this is a dumb question but...

Does anyone know where you can find (sort of) IC piggy back clips? I don't know if they exist or ,if they do, what the name for them is, but I could do with something that clips on to an IC and has contacts that sit on the IC pins..??

The IC are already soldered onto a PCB, I just want to tap into the chips pins without having to solder directly to them..

They still exist. Mouser or Digikey is likely to have them.
I see them on the shelf in my Taiwan store, but haven't bought any.

These were really service tools for DIPs mounted on boards - exactly your situation. Rather than buy one of each size, you might be able to get away using a larger clip [like the 28pin for SXes] on many sizes if you have room at either or both ends to allow it to hang over.

Their neat, but a bit expensive - buy only for immediate use.

ZIF sockets are another expensive, but attractive item that one should only buy for immediate use. I have wasted money on 3 that I never use.

    Hi,

ZIF sockets are all clips that you push a chip into right?

I need it to work the other way round, chip that is already on an existing board, push socket on top of the chip to tap into the pins..?

ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) are IC sockets that have a little release and lock handle to clamp down or release ICs for easy removal. I use them on my BOE-BOT and Professional Development Board (for the BS2).

DIP IC test clips are kind of like clothes pins or hair clips with a spring to fit over the top of ICs (their pins on top). There are connections on top to take measurement readings from an Oscilloscope, Logic Analyzer, meter, etc.

    See attachment pictures.

Like this but just the very botom clip part. It needs to be slightly more compact and more 'perment'.

I use the DIP clips a fair bit at work.
A steady hand can put one of these on to a working system to help debug problems on the fly. A big meaty paw, like mine, has a tendency to hold the clip pins while putting the clips on which can kill a system....

    cheers

I'm glad you seleced the Pomona clips. I've used those as well as the 3M version. The Pomonas are far superior. Buy them from Mouser, though. It's cheaper than going direct.
