Momentary:
A ping can give you a two dimentional view of the area. If you want your bot to go in the farthest direction it wouldn't be that complicated. I can give you more info if this is what you want.

Long Term:
If you want to map an area and store it for future use, it is quite a bit more complicated because you need a lot more memory. There is a thread called Mapping Concept in the sandbox.
