This is a sick world when only a robot gets to drive a car like this...

I'm sure you all know about the DARPA challenge though.

hmmm. they do all seem to spend a rediculous amount on "cool" hardware.

DARPA said of the last grand challenge that a normal 4x4 could drive the course. I think Thrun said it well - treat autonomy as a software problem - so they got a stock VW and spent the rest of the time and money on the software.

The link has one too many .com's in it. Even when I took that out, it would not work.

It works for me here in Darkest Africa, at the end of 8Km (5 Miles) of copper wire...

It's slow to load the pictures but that's probably the slow link, 7Kb (yes 7Kb - that's not typing error).

The Tech Repubic site does get VERY busy though because lots of profesional IT people log onto it every day.

Regards from Kwa Dukuza - where the great King Chaka (Shaka) set up the Capital of the great Zulu race. When you look at our small and grubby town, it's hard to believe...

Pretty interesting. But as stated before, the actual vehicle really does not make all that much difference. It is all about the software that drives it. yeah.gif

Well, true, except whatever vehicle you choose MUST have sufficient space and clearance for the sensors you use. And space and power inside for the processing platform(s) you use.

Stanford's entry in the LAST 'Challenge' had ALL hardware assembled for it by VW (including sensors and engine and steering interfaces). So all they had to do was the software. That kind of simplified the problem.

yes - it needed to be a 4x4 with ground clearance - but nothing special. I believe the Red team spent large amounts of time and money retrofitting the vehicles to achieve this. I suppose that given the target audience a soup up'd vehicle has some merit..... But it still seems like a waste of time and effort.

Standford used a stock Volkswagen Touareg with VW Research modifying it to be drive-by-wire.
