SX Key Editor - Problem in finding port
![John Kauffman](https://forums.parallax.com/uploads/userpics/555/nZBNEPT0B6FMD.jpg)
After reformatting three PCs (WinXP), I wanted to set them up again to use SX key·via USB-to-232 adaptor part 28030. I hav been doing this for a couple years on these 3 PCs without problems. I've also installed the SX editor on dozens of student PCs without problems.
I installed USB drivers from Parallax home page
I installed SX Key Editor with SX/B from SX page.
No error messages during install and a com # assigned to the USB controller.
Plugged in USB cable > USB-to-232 module & PC says it is seen & working.
Check Device Manager, com port is 5
In editor set Configure to port com5
Connet USB to SER module to SX key and connect to·SX Tech Tool, power on.
In editor I click through Run/device/read. I get a message that no SX on COM3.· Note that I set configure for com5.
Troubleshooting: Reboot PC, test on another PC (recently reformatted) and with two different USB to Ser modules, two different keys and on both Tech Tool and pro board as well as lots of reboots, reboots with all other device physically removed, reinstall drivers with·USB cable disconnected·& all the normal steps a desperte man would take.
Always the same problem: I set SX Editor Configure to COM x which matches Device Manager's assignment of USB Com Port and then try to read chip and get a "no SX found on COM y "·which is not the same port as I set in configure.
On the third PC I tried my old FTDI-built-into-the cable (blue box) which I don't think Parallex sells anymore. Same problem.
When I remove SX key and plug USB-to-232 directly into a BasicSTAMP homework board, the Identy function shows the STAMP on the port as set in Device Manager (as expected).
The only factors that seem to be common to all failed tests are the·USB driver and SX Key Editor. Both of these were run straight from the Parallax.com, not even saved.
·· USB driver···· Provider·= FTDI···· date 6/27/2007···· version 2.2.4.0
·· SX Key Editor··· IDE ver 3.0······· SASM DLL ver·1.50.98····· SXB ver 1.00.01
Any suggestions? THanks.

<BRITISH ACCENT> IDE version 3 ?! Good Heavens man, download 3.2.3 right this moment! </BRITISH ACCENT>
There was a change in the way the IDE detected COM ports that was implemented in the IDE after the one you currently have. If that doesn't fix the problem, reply here and we'll see what else could be going on.
Here's the link to the main SX download page:

Thanks,

I've sent a note to webmaster suggesting moving ver 3.0 download to a "legacy software" section.
