Wireless Project for my BS2

Ok so first off, hello all, this is my first post and I'm just beginning to explore the fun world of microcontrollers!

I've worked through the "What's a Microcontroller Book" quite easily and am eager to design my own projects. I'd like to use my BS2 to open the gate at my apt complex. There's no kiosk there so whenever someone visits I have to run down to the gate and use my key fob to open the gate, which is a huge pain. I'd like to set up a switch i can throw in my apartment that sends a signal to a receiver that in turn sends the same frequency as my key fob to open my gate. First, I dont know how to decode my key fob frequency and I'm not sure what components I should use to build the project. If anyone has any experience or input as to a good starting point for this project I'd be very grateful.
Thanks,
Andrew

Umm, I don't think that your apartment-complex management company will find this to be a very good idea...

    Edit:

Oh yeah, welcome to the forums!

I was thinking the same thing...

I wonder if this is an application for a Stamp or if you just need a signal repeater for your key fob so you can press it in your apt. and the signal will reach down to the gate... maybe something like this... http://www.safemart.com/browseproducts/Ademco-Wireless-Repeater---5800-Series---5800RP.HTML

As Kevin said, oh yeah, welcome to the forums!

    Thanks for the replies!

I'm friends with the apartment manager, there's definitely not a problem there. I think a signal repeater might be a good fix, thanks for the idea. Just for educational purposes, do you know how I would go about figuring out what the signal actually is, the idea here is I really want to understand exactly what's going on so that I don't have to purchase assembled components, if a signal repeater is what would work best I'd like to figure out how to build one.

It depends on the unit... some use a rolling code sequence that constantly changes, some use switches to set the code. Try contacting the manufacturer of the gate... they may be able to assist.
