DIP leads

Hello all,

Kind of a weird question. While reading through one of my training manuals I came across an
exploded view of a DIP chip. It shows the blank DIP lead package before it gets sandwiched
into a chip.

Image (B) from figure 1-24 found in NEETS Mod 14 - Intro to Microelectronics (Image attached).

I also noticed that some of the parallax boards have them soldered directly to the edge of their
board. I liked the way this looked and became curious about doing this myself on some of my
projects. I then began searching for suppliers for microchip raw materials and ran into a wall.
Either my search wasn't thorough enough or it's just hard to come by if you're not a chip manufacturer.
Oh well, I e-mailed the support at parallax and I guess the guys at the help desk (or whoever answers
the support emails) didn't have access to this info. I was wondering if any of you either know where I
should look next or have any suggestions as to where to look next? I have looked at the through-hole
leads and have used them in a couple of my designs, but am now curious as to where these are found.
Thank you in advance for the info.

Take care all.

There's nothing like a new idea and a warm soldering iron.

Thank you, very good link. I wasn't even able to find something along these lines. Hopefully with some more searching I can find the entire DIP lead assemblies. Thanks again for pointing me in a good starting point.

    Have a good one!

I'm a bit confused... the picture you show is that of a standard DIP chip. The Parallax BS2 is NOT a DIP chip... it is a very tiny circuit board that just happens to be the same size as a DIP chip. What is it exactly what you are looking for? I believe that the mill-max link above (or similar mfg.) is for the pins that the BS2 circuit board uses.

    JonKopp:

See this thread for "leadframe" pins.

    Hi Jon;

I have bought these from die-tech inc (www.die-tech.com). They were rather pricey... about 2 cents per pin as I recall, and a minimum order of 50,000 pieces.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the responses, and the links to the other posts. The pins from mill-max or something similar are probably what they use. Thanks also pjv. I just saw the picture and I guess I got fixated on finding that exact piece. Oh well, it's probably too expensive unless you buy in bulk anyways. Thanks to all for the help. These parts do lend more ways to build a project. On to some tinkering!
