The BASIC STAMP Stick

I liked the idea of the Prop Stick, the kit form of the Propeller Microcontroller, so I used the same design and created the BASIC STAMP Stick. This allows the BASIC STAMP to be put into different projects through a ZIF socket, or a standard IC socket. I also like this design because not only it can be integrated directly into project ans swapped to other project, it also can be used in a breadboard for development work.

    Not a bad idea. I just found it easier to interface the BS2 chip to the serial port (via the connections on the data sheet), and I already have a USB to serial adapter. I think an FTDI or similar chip would have to be used, thus a bigger board.

    Ironically, I have something similar that I'm using.

    Since it is very handy for protecting the BasicStamps pins for wear and tear, and provides a physically tight programing interface, there is a real need for it.

    I was thinking of naming it, 'the Stamp Protector'

    Still, the race is won by the swiftest. You got there first. Congradulations.

    On mine, I did realign the I/O pin distance to a regular narrow DIP spacing though [noparse][[/noparse].3" less width]. It seems like all the less expensive project boards I solder up do not easily accommodate the wide 24pin DIP.·That allows me to build more cheap prototypes that are solidly soldered.

    I also didn't carry through the 4 serial port pins - no reason to do so.

    I need to get you some photos to explain better.

    That would be cool, I would defnitely like to see pictures. Do you just have the serial programming pis terminae at a pin header to still program the STAMP? I like the STAMP PROTECTOR for the identifying phrase. I only used the STAMP STICK because I have a Propeller STICK that I assembled and thought that it should follow suit. As for your idea of the .3" DIP socket, i like that, I only used the same configuration as the BASIC STAMP because I have some 24 and 40 pin ZIF sockets. Even for using ZIF sockets in my final designs, it allows the BASIC STAMP to be moved from project to project more easily.

    You are welcome to use the name 'Stamp Protector', you can even trademark it if you want. It does get the concept across that the carrier is useful protection.

    As I said above, the 0.3 spacing really allows me to use cheaper ready-made single sided boards as they don't support 0.6 devices very well. The wires need to be run under the DIP socket to reach the I/O - nearly impossible.

    I do find the ZIF socket nearly useless. It is quite bulky. The only real need for having one is if you want to test or program a lot of BasicStamps and that might only happen if you are teaching a class of 20 students.

    I have a 24pin ZIF that sits on a similar adapter for exactly that purpose, but I rarely use it.

    That looks more like an OEM. I think that the idea was to make a part into which you could insert a normal stamp and be able to program it without extra hardware. Also, that uses a larger DIP chip and not the small surface ount one used on small stamps, making it larger.

    right.· I took the idea from the PropStick Kit, which I use all the time and find it to be convenient.· I wanted the BASIC Stamp to do the same thing, I could put it in a socket on a project and still be able to program it without having to put the serial port on the board or remove the chip for programming.

    The Stamp Stack II Kit above is pretty neat, but still overkill. I'd rather see something like a BS2 OEM-lite circuit (no RS-232 level shifter or voltage regulator) that you use with a separate programmer. Basically just seven components on PCB that can drop into a breadboard. In the Ardiuno world these are starting to pop up so I think there's a niche market for such a thing.
