I'm trying to decide if I should renew the site or not. No one is supporting it financially (except for me) and the registration / hosting costs are adding up. I get a VERY small amound from the google ads, but that isn't paying the bandwidth.
Donate a few bucks if you want it up. The web archive link will go down in a few weeks once they figure out that it is not public domain.
Buy a cd of the site content if you want a personal copy. Do NOT try to rip the site via some offline viewer / WGET / Whatever... That increases my band width costs and really ticks me off. The site aggressivly defends against it and will block access as well as email your ISP complaining about the abuse.
Based on my hit counters, search volumn for SX related topics is just about dead, so I'm not at all sure I see the point in bothering.

If YOU are no longer intersted in the SX the maybe you should pass along sxlist to someone who does care.
maybe Parallax or another member on the forums would be interested.
It seems as though you looking for money...for nearly nothing.
I was once a paying member of the list, but the promises of contests and newsletters that never materialized forced me cancel.
you talk about how much bandwidth it takes up and then state how there is no longer any interest in the SX?
which is it?
Don't wanna start any trouble but, just state the obvious, that every year when the hosting fees come due we hear the same "need money" story
maybe its time to step aside and let someone else run the show.
You had a great run,·
you did a great job with setting up and keeping sxlist alive all these years,
we appreciate it!
now it may be time to move on
"Just callin it like I see it" sorry for being honest and open
P.S. Don't let the list Die its very useful
obviously there is interest or this wouldn't be a topic in the forums "wheres sxlist.com"
As it happens, someone (who wishes to remain anon) DID step up, in what I consider a more constructive way than you did, and made a contribution which covered the registration fee. The google ads will about cover the small bandwidth.
If anyone cares to host the ~3GB of files that make up the site, please do step forward. If you have the site up and running on your server when the reg comes due next year, I'll be happy to transfer it.
I don't know who you are, DTQ, but if you want a refund on whatever you contributed in the past, say so. I'm not happy about the way the newsletter worked out either. If I could have cost justified the time, I would have. I couldn't, and I won't appologise for the people I have to justify my time to; my wife and kids. There weren't enough people like you who were willing to contribute. I do appreciate those who did and I do feel like I owe them. That's why I paid the registration and bandwidth myself in 2004.
As to "next to nothing"... Are you kidding? Show me any other site that has the volumn of SX code and informaton that sxlist.com has, other than Parallax themselves.

how much do you pay for the site.... PM me with the answer. I may be interested in taking it over.... I feel it does have a lot of value and information. Let me know.. Even though I only went to your site a few times I always like to have as much information as possible and I think you do have·great information on the site..
I would really hate to see this site die. I have NO idea what kind of bandwidth you have per month. But I do get a lot of bandwidth for not much money.
If you are/were serious about releasing the site, would you mind posting that here? You might be surprised at the serious offers you get.
Or, would you mind contacting me with some more details? I don't care about how much you make with Google. I am more interested in your bandwidth needs per month.
What I mean by "next to nothing" is that its a static site, its the same, nothing has really changed in quite some time.
so when go and try to sell a service to keep the site going people expect change. for example I pay $3 a month to geocaching.com...why, one is to support them and there cause, but also to get the update emails stating there are new caches in my area. i also have the ability to to certain things that unpaid members cannot do.
my point is, is that the newsletter was a good idea, the one i did actually receive was great! Although at first you may have not had enough membership to support the site with the newsletter, I beleive if you stuck with it others would have joined. If you build it the will come!
It doesn't alway happen right away. You need to get people syked about what you have to offer and then deliver the product as stated.
I understand the whole time thing myself, i got a wife and 3 kids a full time+ job, host and design numerous web sites (a few a also "charity") and I also I got my own thing going with designing industrial controls/electronics/programming , ect. It seems as though the is never a moment of rest but ya just gotta keep chuggin along.
PM me let me know what the site costs(money and bandwidth wise) or what it would cost for you to burn me a DVD of the site. I'll mirror it, and next year you can let me know If you want to pass it along.
maybe others can help with the site as far as admining it goes so it doesn't take up so much time.
I'm not trying to "harsh your gig" as I said before the site is great (wealth of info) and you have done a great job with it. but if its no longer worth your time or money. its time to pass it along
Omnis, my hoster has 250gigs of transfer and 15 gigs worth of space for $6.95 a month.· I've used them for several years for nothing more than a hobby.· Never really made anything from it.· I can't understand what the huge issue is.· If your doing this for a money making venture that you want people to send you money, your not going to get it with the huge amount of ads everywhere.· It's just my opinion of course.· Perhaps check out some sites that are hot, and emulate them.
Be careful of these "80 gigs of bandwidth for $0.14 per year!!!" deals.
99.99999999% of these "hosting providers" are simply resellers (I know, because I used to be one) and they are overselling like crazy. Most of them will tell you to go elsewhere if you actually start using what they supposedly promise.
Hmm, that's something I haven't tried. Since it's near the end of the month. I'll transfer 10 gigs of pics up to a directory, download them, remove them, and reupload them 7 or so times and see if they say anything. I'll try to get about 200 gigs worth of transfer.
I checked my disk space and I've currently got only 895 megs tied up.· I'll start uploading 250 megs worth of files tonight, then transfer them back and forth a couple times.
Looks like I've only got 370 megs of transfer in so far this month.· I do alot of ebaying with my own picture hosting.·
I never thought of checking to see how they'd react if I used alot of bandwidth.· Thanks for the idea!
