What's your favorite transistor/MOSFET for general use?

I need to re-stock my bench. My 25 year old bag of 2N2222s I bought at the TRW swapmeet has come to an end. I've lived with them for so long, do I need to change? I'd like to move to MOSFETs.

I need some normal current .2A to .5A TO-18/TO-92 stuff. (pull relays, etc. etc.) to replace 2N2222???
And some higher current, around 5A to 10A TO-220 package.

So, your breadboarding something and you need a device. What do you reach for?

A 2N2222, a BS170 or a 2N7000? What is it?

and for more power, what? a IRLZ43, or IRL520?

So, what in your parts bin right now? And what does your hand reach for first?

Normaly 9 - 15 volts supply, pushing them with 5 volt logic.

Thanks, Chris

    I'll grab either a 2N7000 (TO-92) or an IRLZ34N (TO-220).

Far from being completely obsolete, the 2N2222 TO-92 is still alive and kicking so there is no real reason to stop using it. I also have a stash of 2N7000 or VN10's when I'm more concerned voltage drop. I tend to always need more than one higher power transistor (than a 2N2222) so I always keep some driver arrays handy.

I use FDP7030BL for logic level driven LED systems.

Thanks for the ideas. Oh, I will still keep some 2N2222s around. I got spoiled becasue all these were TO-18s. I'm going to buy a handful of each of the newer stuff and give them a test drive.

    Thanks again, Chris

    Hi CCraig

I use the BC546 (plastic) which doesn't have as good a spec as the good old 2N2222. I've got a thing about putting jam cans on my pcbs.

PN2222 (the plastic 2N2222) are not always available here.

Using MOSFETs for breadboarding may be more problematic since they are prone to damage from static. I do like the 2n7000 though.

That really points you back to the 2N2222 for almost anything. I suspect the primary reasonfor using the MOSFET is less wasted power. So it might fit more comfortably into a finished project.

Once a project is complete with components soldered in place, the MOSFETs tend to be protected unless they are wired directly to interfaces.

For really high power applications, usually you risk stocking the wrong device. I'd still to the 2N2222 and its compliment. [Is that the 2N2904?]

I think the the 2N2907 is considered to be the complement of the 2N2222.

I also keep plastic and T-03 versions of 2N3055 and MJ2955's for power work (Cheaper than mosfets in some cases)

I've been using HRF3205's lately. Nice TO-220 package with 90Amp max.
