Hardware Communication Error

Well,
·· I am not having much luck with this one, Its a home grown BS1 OEM, I have built several of these without a problem. It will identify without any trouble tho. I have Checked / Cleaned all of the connections from the PC, to the chip. I have re-heated all of the solder joints , and verified all connections on the board. I started having this error, on the last chipset that I built, but cleaning the header pins solved it. I wonder.........maybe the BS1-serial adapter may be the cause, tho I have not let any smoke out of it (we all know that anything electronic runs on tiny amounts of smoke stored inside).

·Has anyone else ever had this problem? I guess I'll go build another and see ifn itll work.

Have you made any changes to the PC that you are using, such as adding a PDA or other software that may use a com port?· I would see if you can check against a known good BS1 to verify it.

It could be as Dave has mentioned - some other program is using the COM port. Shut down all other programs except your programmer (and explorer!) and try again. Also check that the cable you are using is undamaged and that the ports on on both ends have all their pins.
I have had both of these problems in the past.

Is it possible to try another computer?

I'm having the same problem with my laptop and the board of edu. (rev b) using the USB cord. It starts to copy and then fails with "Hardware communication failure! Check serial cable and power". I can then plug directly into my desktop using the same cable and program without problems. Just doesn't work on my laptop, which is a drag.

Welded another BS1 together..........works just fineyeah.gif . The only thing I did different was make the leads (pci, pco, vss) way shorter...... .75 inches vs 4 inches....... The leads are 20ga solid copper, three extra inches shouldnt make a capacitance or resistance problem... should it?
