how do i hook up a 5V LDO Voltage Regulator

the tab on the top is ground does that mean i have to tie it to ground or can i leave it unconnected

    It is electrically the same as the middle pin -- it doesn't have to be "connected" (too), but bear in mind that it is still GND.

    DEFINITELY don't forget the caps that Blackbird455 mentioned. On one board I designed, I thought I'd try powering it on before I soldered them in place. Long story short, 10.5v went strait into VDD on a propeller (7.2 volts too high).
