Using a digital pot meter with the Prop

Hey peeps,
I am looking to use the MCP41010 digital pot meter with SPI serial interface (datasheet: here). I'd like to use in lieu of the resistor network in this thread (Better Boe-Bot IR Distance Measurements). Has anyone ever used one of these devices (the pot meter, not the LEDs :))? I have never really worked with one of these before so I am not even sure how I'd go about configuring its values. Ideally I'd like to switch values about 10 times a second or so and instead of just 2 LEDs, I'll be hooking up 8 of them (all around the bot) and firing them off in a sequence. I'm using this method instead of the (much nicer) Sharp IR sensors, as these are way too expensive (in excess of $20 a piece here). Any input is appreciated!
