Power/Gnd Terminology?

Would someone mind giving a little history/definition on the following terms?

Vdd,Vcc,Vss

I understand what they represent, but I'd like to include an explanation in the
next Cookbook that a beginner would understand and be able to remember.
I can't seem to put my finger on a simple explanation, or memory aid.

Basically they are the power supply pin designations for different transistor technologies.

    This article will help:

They aren't that bad (if you know about transistors) See: history section of link.

I look at it like learning english, german and italian. No matter how hard you try, you still think in the first language you learned unless you reach GURU status. TTL nomenclature still rules for me... and it may take a 12 step program to get me to stop thinking that way.

Thanks for asking. I always wondered too. The article sheds a little light on the subject. If you get a better story - I'm all ears or eyes - I guess.

Since Parallax markets to the hobbyist HARD, it would be nice to seem them buck this "standard." I'd love to see some microcontrollers with power pins labeled +5/+3.3/+whatever and GND instead of Vcc/Vdd and Vss.

    But that's just me...
