Stepper motor pulse length duration

Hello,
I am looking for information on how much time to energize the coils of a stepper motor. Initially, I don't intend to put a rotary encoder to get feedback on the precise angle, but if I absolutely need that, then I will put it.
Ideas, links, suggestions?

Use a driver chip, like the Allegro A3977, much less to worry about.

All you need then is generate step and direction inputs.

Cheaper parts are L297/298, but the 3977 gives you 1/8 microstepping, very useful for CNC.

Most driver chips are only good for max 32/40/50v. if you·need higher voltage/current then mosfet designs are better.

Bipolar drive is better than unipolar.

    Fred,
Thanks for the document. I learned a lot from it.

    Gavin,
I downloaded the Allegro datasheet. Just wondering, what is that in your Avatar?

    Frank,

My Avatar is a very lossy jpeg of my cnced X1 micromill with HTS rapid toolchanger and vice.

    Background is my messy shed:)

Google "Jones on Steppers" That's where most of us start.
