Charleyplexing LED displays for the SX or BS2 ?

Can charleyplexing be done on the SX chips or BS2? I read that 20mA outputs on the pins are not enough and that some of the AVR's have 40mA. Has anyone done any larger scale LED charlieplex displays (64 LEDs or greater) using SX chips or the BS2. I might be interesting in trying this but don't want to damage my micro-controllers if this is a problem.

The SX chips (including the BS2 models that use them) are rated at 30ma per I/O pin. The Propeller is rated at 40ma.
