Does anyone here know of a FTDI IC packaged
in a DIP package (or a sub-assembly) ?

My eyesight is too poor to work with surface mount

I don't think they have one. FTDI and others do sell a 24-pin DIP module and others sell a smaller module as well like: www.ftdichip.com/Products/EvaluationKits/UM245R.htm. Check Saelig in the US.

Pololu (www.pololu.com) sells a USB to serial converter on a small circuit board.

It is not FTDI - it has a different type of chip and its own drivers, but it works well and is easy to add to a project. It uses .1 inch spaced headers to connect to your board, so you can either plug it in or solder it in, depending on your preference.· I've used these for about a year and they seem to work well.

there is a very nice project out there called "software USB driver for AVR".

It is possible to have an USB >>> serial device in a DIL Package.

Thanks guys.

Cost is my biggest issue. I think I'm going to use the Parallax
2 transistor hookup and a cheap usb-232 molded cable.

I wish that ttl level usb cables did not cost $35 !

Thanks again

USB-Serial adapters are REGULARLY offered for less that $10 at Ebay...

But they are NOT TTL leveled.
Maybe open the $10·adapter and "dremmel out" the MAX RS232·chip :-)))

I would take a dremmel to an adaptor, if it was for one project :)

deSilva, I followed your link but did not find any photos. Where
should I be looking ?

To all: I did find one at Mouser for ~$20

i just opend my one (very easy to open).

Its a $10 Digitus DA70146 USB 2.0 zu Seriell-Adapter.

I can see a FT232BM + EEPROM + SP213 and there is a NPN Transitor :-)

This can be converted for the Prop.

Franz, if I understand this project www.obdev.at/products/avrusb/powerswitch-de.html this is just some AVR code easily portable to the Prop! So why bother with this interface rather than connect the USB directly?

Oh, I see - there is this stupid bootstrap loader smile.gif

But I have just one PropPlug for all my Props (4? 5?) now, for downloading. I do not need it for the WORKING of them...

On the other hand, this is a $2 PropPlug - I am sure you can easily sell it for $ 20 smile.gif

Hi deSilva,

i think the original question was "is there a USB chip available in DIP Package".
Of course there is no one available but making a $2 USB "PropPlug" by just using a ATTINY2313
is interresting.

Franz, I am deeply disappointed! I thought you would deliver a port from the C/ASM AVR sources to Prop-Code within hours :-(

oh smile.gif

deSilva, not today but what i can deliver is an one hour Digitus hack.
Just converted a USB2RS232 Converter to a "PropPlug" and it works.
This just saved me $40 burger.gif , money i better can spend for "Propeller-Pizza's".

have fun

I just managed to find it (image attached) - an eval unit for the FTDI 232 - called 'EVAL232R' - I seem to remember a similar DIP configuration eval board also but, as of yet, I have failed to lay my hands on it ..·this one has·a serial DB9 onboard and a USB type B socket ...

and of course there is the parallax offering ....

or if like me you needed to program one in a hurry !!! Just use a 3232 and a couple of caps and resistors and a transistor !

Yes, when you still have a RS232 Port availabe at your notebook then·it's the
better option. Thats for sure.

John,

why do you use an RS232 device programming your Parallax Protos.
You can use your easyPROP too because there is a 4 Pin header onboard.
Just make a 4 wire cable from the easyPROP to the Parallax Proto Board and you can
load the Proto Board via the easyPROP's USB.
Only verify does not work.

Yeah - but this was when I first got the proto boards and had to prove the serial connection prior to integrating it into an industrial control board for integration into an already existing (serial) 'shop floor data collection system' - as well as field programming if required ... I have a jumper inline for reset on the industrial boards ..

and of course before I got the EasyProp !!

thats very nice. You could use it for programming the Prop EEPROM via Ethernet.
My webcat-board can do the same but i only have one RS232 port available.
Its RS232 via Ethernet, right????

i can see 4 boards, looking for a connecting to your 4 serial port ethernet jobbie smile.gif
But which one can handle it??
It will not be the easyPROP or Parallax Proto or Parallax Dev Kit but i think it will be
John's Industrial Control Board because you have a MAX232 onboard.
This Jocker goes to John !!!!!
