Using Propeller Proto Board with USBto232 Adapter

Hi Green,

I think I can use part #28030 USB to 232 Adapter with the Propeller Proto Board, but I am not sure of the pin connections.
Can you help me out?

Thanks.

The Protoboard doesn't have any RS232 connections. The Propeller manual shows several ways to add an RS232 connection to your Protoboard and the PropStick has one built-in. There are several completely different USB to serial adapters (PropPlug, PropClip, and USB2SER) that will connect with the Protoboard.

    Dear Green,

I wanted to use USB2SER to connect to the ProtoBoard but I realised that it was using the outdated FTDI232BM chip.
That is why I want to try to use #28030 which uses the newer FTDI232RL chip.

I think I need to make a short cable that connects the 9pin "D" connector on the #28030 to the Header Pins (meant for PropPlug) on the Protoboard.
I hope you can give me the pin connections for this short cable.

    William,

If your using this Parallax item:

    http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28030

You will need to build this circuit:

    http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/prod/prop/SerialtoPropeller.pdf

Since Item#: 28030 connects USB from the PC and converts it to serial (RS-232)

However if you have this Parallax item: (USB2SER) (USB to Serial TTL)

    http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28024

Then you'll have to move or add a four pin header to the Propeller ProtoBoard:

    http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/prod/prop/Propeller-ProtoBoard-v1.1.pdf

    Hope this helps,

If you attempt to connect the #28030 to the PropPlug header pins without the circuit that Mike Cook mentioned, you will damage the Propeller chip. There is not enough difference between the FTDI232BM and the FTDI232RL to use one over the other. The newer chip mostly has features that simplify and reduce the cost of the the adapter made with it.

The link doesn't work any more, Does anyone have the schematic for that circuit that connects the USBto232 to the propeller? Thanks

There is the three transistor circuit on page 5 of the Propeller Datasheet:
