Two USB-Serial adapters co-exist?

This is my first post to this great forum.

I have my laptop with Keyspan driver installed for other projects (non-Parallax). Tried to install FDTI driver for my USB Stamp board. Windows XP won't recognize the device, no matter how I tried in many different ways. I checked the operating system with Device Manager, no sign of any COM ports. Suspected the driver for Keyspan adapter pervents the installation of another driver for a different adapter. So, I removed the driver and rebooted my system (to be sure it is gone completely.) Now, FDTI driver is really installed successfully.

Wonder whether it is safe to re-install the driver for Keyspan adapter or not. Anyone has similar experience as mine? Is it possible to have two or more drivers installed for different adapters?

    Hello,

There’s no reason why the two drivers cannot co-exist unless the KeySpan driver is poorly written. In the past I had a KeySpan, FTDI, Radio Shack and BAFO drivers all installed and each adapter working correctly. Take care.

    Chris,

Thanks for the info. It is good to know it is possible to have two or more drivers for USB adaptors co-existed on the same PC. However, pray tell us how you did. Change COM ports before installing the next driver? If so, how? I am running Windows XP.

    Geo,

There is no magic, save luck. Sometimes Windows tries to assign VCP’s to the same port. When that happens there is a conflict. The trick is watching what is assigned to each adapter at the time of installation. That way it is easier to identify possible conflicts. Also, sometimes I have seen customers hit cancel when the driver installation wizard comes up a second time. This effectively cancels the installation. Sometimes drivers (including ours) have more than one element to install. For example the FTDI driver installs the USB Device Driver then it installs the VCP Driver. If you do not complete both steps it isn’t fully installed. The executable saves you from this by installing everything at once, but if you install from a zipped or CD version then you could make this mistake also. Finally, if you allow your PC to connect to the internet to search for a driver it will often find something it thinks is compatible but may not be. See the thread below for an example that has affected us in the past. Take care.
