Hyperterm alternatives for on Vista

Due to there not being a "debug" window in Prop Tool, the Prop tutorials refers its users to an application called Hyperterm. This application, however, is no longer shipped with Vista. It was a 3rd party application in any case and prior to Vista it was shipped merely for convenience. We all know that convenience is something that must be stamped out and dealt with harshly. So in order for budding Propellerites to still be able to debug their favourite new controller here are two good alternatives:

PuTTY - It can do serial but it's also a telnet, ssh and rlogin client. It has only one drawback; you can't momentarily disconnect without exiting the application. I use it together with a nice Gadget on my sidebar that allows me to single click on the various configurations to start it on COM5 with the correct baud rate. The gadget is called PuTTYpal, you can find it on the gadget site (right click on your side bar->add gadgets->get more gadgets online) You can download PuTTY itself here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html.

HyperTerminal Private Edition - Available from http://www.hilgraeve.com/htpe/. I have only ever used PuTTY, so I can't tell you if HyperTerminal PE is any good, but I think it allows you to at least temporarily disconnect from the COM port while you reprogram the Prop.

There you have it. I am sure there are almost as many alternatives to these two free programs as there are members on this forum.

Gr,
Mightor

Procomm Plus is what I use.
The don't make a VISTA version (symantec product) and probably won't, but I'm sure it'll still work (just might not have ALL the bells and whistles).

I can change baud rates and stop bits on the fly as well as com ports! Very good, will do logging and supports modems as well!

I've found a more viable alternative is to do the following:

    * Find your XP Pro/Home CD
    * Instert it into your CD ROM drive
    * Reboot the computer with the CD enabled as a boot device
    * Install XP by fist deleting the partition with Vista on, and then creating a new partition for XP.

This solves all kinds of problems, and seems to signficantly increase performance of the machine.

    John R,

I think you misread the thread's title. This one is about alternatives for Hyperterm, not Vista.

    Thanks,
    Mightor

No, I read the title, was just offering another "tounge in cheek" alternative for the fact that Hyperterm is missing from Vista·smile.gif

Actually the Hypertem.exe/dll that comes with XP works under Vista too. You can copy it from an older XP version over your Vista installation. Note that you need to copy two modules: hypertrm.exe and hypertrm.dll.

I am not sure if that poses a license problem, though. HyperTerm as shipped with pre-Vista Windows might only be legally usable with those versions. I Am Not A Lawyer, though.
