PING sensor Waterproofing?

I am in the process of creating a display for a museum that will incorporate a number of PING)) sensors in locations where patrons can reach and interact with them.

Each sensor will be oriented to face upwards allowing people to "hover" their hand above the sensor to operate the exhibit. I'm worried about people intentionally or unintentionally getting liquid, dirt etc into the sensor. I'd like to "waterproof" the sensor also to help facilitate cleaning.

I assume I would have to use an acoustically transparent covering of some sort, but before I started experimenting with all kinds of things I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has already solved this particular problem. :)

    Vern,

Futurlec has individual waterproof ultrasonic sensors for sale in their sensors section. You would have to remove and replace the present sensors on the PING))) with the waterproof ones.

You might want to consider using high power IR diodes and an IR sensor. Using high power IR diodes gives a good return signal to the IR detector even when the reflective surface is dark.

    Just a thought.

This subject came up in another thread not too long ago:

You might also consider a 45 degree reflector so that the sensors could be facing horizontal.
