Hey all,

I'd like to add Bluetooth via a Sparkfun BlueSMIRF to my newly acquired Penguin.

Obviously, this will be a challenge as the Penguin only has one spare I/O pin which is brought out to the expansion header -- and I also want two-way communication.

I'm thinking of butchering my Penguin my de-soldering the 7-segment LED and using those lines. Or maybe I should just attach tiny wires to the 74-series logic chip on the understand?

Comments? Suggestions? Warnings? ;)

TiA,

-marc

It appears there are quite a few unused pins on the Penguin BS2PX?

    So, two questions:

    (1) Is there anything to stop me soldering really fine wires to them? :)
    (2) Could I suggest that a few spare pins be brought out to vias in the next board rev for those of us who want a Franken-Penguin?

There's nothing to stop you from soldering really fine wires to the unused pins on the BS2PX. They may not do anything for you though. The BS2PX Basic interpreter only provides for 16 I/O pins and they're all spoken for. There's no way to make the other pins do things.

I guess I've been playing in the SX world for too long now...I had no idea that Stamps were I/O crippled! :(

Looks like I'll have to take Ken's advice and use the Piezo output.

    Thanks for your advice!

'You sure about that, Mike? I don't have a BS2px, but the "16 I/O" BS2pe recognizes the AUXIO and MAINIO statements anyway, and it can read/write the extra pins that aren't brought out (but which have their internal pullups activated). It might be worth an experiment...

Phil is correct. The pins have the SX Internal pull-ups enabled. If you could deal with that you can access them. Of course, tacking onto the pins of the interpreter is something many won’t want to try. Damaging the chip could be costly since it is surface mounted to the circuit board. Take care.
