BS2p24 Won't Communicate with Laptop via RS232

I know that this should not even be an issue, especially when I am using an education board. All I need to do is plug in the power source (outlet), connect the IC , and plug in the serial cable.... I have also made sure the FIFO is not checked in device manager, that the correct device and version of Basic is selected in my code. When I click on identify, it registers the feedback loop. I had my chip communicating with the computer previously, and after I had some IT work done on this laptop at work, it stopped communicating. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you check your laptop with another computer to see if they will communicate? Set up Hyperterminal on both, connect with a null-modem cable and see if typing on one appears on the other.
Are you using a USB to serial converter? Did the proper driver get replaced during the IT work?
Cheers,
