Reading spec sheets for IR Emitter/receiver set

I've got yet another stupid newbie problem...
I recently bought a rather nice IR emitter/receiver set that looked like it would be perfect for an encoder.
The only problem is, I had assumed it would be very easy to wire up to my BOE-Bot using something a good
deal like the "IR headlights" projects in the book... I was wrong I guess.

If anyone has time and the will to instruct a total noob, please check out the spec sheet (link below) and
give me some advice on wiring this thing up to my BS2.

I believe the "IR Headlights" use an IR 'DECODER'. The nice thing about a 'decoder' is that it only detects IR-light that is being switched on-and-off at a 38 Khz rate. This prevents ambient light from confusing the decoder.

What you've got there is an IR emitter-reciever. The IR-emitter is just an IR-LED. But the Reciever is basically a transistor, which conducts (or not) based on the amount of IR light hitting it. So this circuit is useful if you had a 'blade' passing through the slot, the IR-reciever would give you a high (or low) when interrupted, and a low (or high) when it 'sees' the IR-LED.
