Building a DS1302 (or 1307) module

I thought I would pass along a tip on building RTC modules.

The crystal pads and the RTC pads that the crystal connect to are very, very sensitive to residual flux.· The module will set and read the time but it will not advance the time if there is the tiniest bit of flux or moisture present.· I use water soluble paste flux and with water I have an abundance of clean "flux remover".· If yoiu are using rosin flux, the board must be rinsed at least once in new alcohol, preferably twice to ensure that the alcohol is not contaminated.· Even if you are using No Clean Flux, it has to be completely removed.· No Clean may not be conductive, but it is certainly capacitive, and that will kill the crystal oscillations.· The boards should be baked for 30 minutes at 125F after cleaning.

    Sid:

I plugged the ds1302 into a socket, and soldered the crystal to the legs of the socket, and the time does not advance. Should I solder it to the chip itself?

    Thanks,

    Migs

Migs, is this a perf board thing or a regular PC board?· Your crystal should have a load capacitance of 6pf.· Make sure you have the right crystal, and that the solder connections for the crystal have been thoroughly cleaned.

Can you post a picture of that you have - top and bottom?

I agree with Sid. Check the load capacitance on the crystal. It needs to be 6pf. The 12pf versions are way more common.
