Smoking LED on boe bot!

I was running my boe bot for a couple minutes when suddenly it stopped moving and smoke started coming off. Apparently, one of the IR LED's burned out:

Is there any reason for this, or was it just a defective LED? I wired it with the resistor just like the book said. Any input on preventing this from happening again would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you sure you have the correct resistor value? It would seem that either the resistor was too small or the IR LED shorted against another lead.

A photo of the entire solderless breadboard showing the wiring/components would be helpful.

that will tell you how to find the resistor value, but we really can't help you further without a photo of everything...

Thanks for all of the input everyone, but I think Chris got it. The right lead of the LED goes to the resistor and then to Vdd (when the pin goes HIGH) and the left lead of the IR sensor goes directly to Vdd, so it would have bypassed the resistor. I'll be sure to move the IR detector back a few holes so it wont happen again!
