can i measure a car's rpm with the cigarette lighter. i know it can be done with the gtech http://gtechpro.com/index.html g-meter, and the rpm 8000 pro http://www.caesardatasystems.com/RPM8000PRO-Datasheet.pdf. but how can i bo it with a basic stamp. the 8000 pro says it measures the frequency of the ripples (100-120 per rev.) can this be measured with pulsin or is there additional hardware needed. thanks.

    I'm just guessing here, but...

The signals will be WAY to small to be read by the Stamp directly. You need a minimum of I forget exactly, but lilke 1.7V, to be read by a Stamp.

You will need to investgate op-amps and amplify the signals. I would expect a circuit like that to be a little tricky to get to work reliably.

Much easier would be to add a sensor into the mix.
