FingerPrint Recognition

Is the Propeller powerful enough to do finger print recognition using any
commercial fingerprint reader like TouchChip from STMicro?
Anybody tried this before?

Thanks.

I don't know anything about fingerprint reading but I think it will really depend on how much intelligence is in the scanner. From what I gather alot of the desktop models are just a line camera (linear array CCD/CMOS) and you swipe your finger over them so it acts like a scanner. The comparison is done by checking certain key features rather than a simple game of snap. It may be that the chip outputs codes for these features which can be compared to a database, if that is the case then you can probably get somewhere. If on the other hand they are literally just a camera you will have your work cut out and would have to find out the resolution and do plenty of reading on the required processing.

Please take above with pinch of salt.

    Hi folks,

Long time no-one talked about FingerPrints ;)

I'm looking for a fingerprint sensor to connect to my propeller. Does any have done that previously?

    Thanks,

I think that Atmel makes one. I don't know how easy they are to get hold of, though.

The TouchChip you mention is now a usb only device from UPEK http://www.upek.com/
I have only been lurking here and reading the backlog for a while, but I would guess such a device would use the USB hosting with the HID side of things or a proprietary protocol.
As far as I have read, the only usb hosting support available on the Propeller platform right now is for mass storage.(like thumb drives etc)

Of course, that does not mean it would be impossible to interface with such a device but it would limit cog & resource availability, based on what is needed for the
mass storage support. (i.e. Prop still has ~50% resources free hosting mass storage (four cogs unless I'm mistaken))

Anyone up for usb hosting beyond mass storage ( or have you guys managed that too?)

FPC AM3 is a sensor and processor system that you can talk to with the Prop with simple serial commands. Up to 1000 users per system can be stored. I use it and it is great, but you must design your own mounting system, it is only the sensor module and no shroud. In quantity of 1 they are around 150 USD. It is unlikely to be able to use the Prop alone as any type of serious fingerprint processing.
