How to read/write serial port from MS Access (VBA) using just API calls ?

I just need simple "read a byte / write a byte" functions.
We don't have MSCOMM and don't want to have to use someone elses libarary.
I've search for awhile, but I can't find anything that just tells you how to do it.
Has anyone done this before ?
Bean.

If you can live with going back to an older version of Windows that has DOS, QuickBasic or most of the other Basics have direct access to the com ports from within the language.
Its a simple process to do what you want, almost like Pbasic!
·· edit ---just saw you're using Access
may not be as simple!
Cheers
