Has anyone ever tried interfacing a smoke detector (either photoelectric or ion) to a BASIC STAMP BS2?

A lot. Here are a couple of links. The UCB particle monitor is a high end smoke detector that is modified and brought under control of an OWL2pe (Stamp 2pe core) data logger. Reading the ion sensor is quite easy. Photoelectric is more problematic, but a lot of useful information comes from the combination. Most of our engineering work has been directed toward making the data quantitative in relation to established standards. It is an ongoing project and we have funding from CARB (California air resources board) to develop a next generation device, still relatively low cost to push lower with the baseline sensitivity.
